Hi,

I got a setup with DDRC-24 and DIRAC 1.0, running on my MAC Pro, with Catalina OS, and the minidsp measurimg mic.

I run the DIRAC setup, adjust levels according to instructions, use the "sofa" profile and runs all the measurements, use the standard target curve, run "optimize", and go to the last page where i move the newly made filters into slot 1 of the DDRC-24.

I have Spotify on the same computer, i close down Dirac, and run the minidsp app where i can switch between the four filter slots, and also swith in and out the filterslot created in DIRAC.
I use the USB connection between computer to the DDRC-24 to transfer the music i these tests.

Here is the thing........when i switch in the DIRAC filter created before......but first of all, i cannot hear much change, actually .the sound becomes a bit "boomy", and not very nice. I would expect more firm base since i do have some resonances, but the sound actually sound better without the DIRAC correction, that with.......

My speakers are a pair of JBL L-90, very nice 3-way speakers with 12" woofer that i hopec i could tweek to sound even better than they did before.

Any idear what i do wrong?

Martin

A screenshot of the Dirac before/after would help people here comment.

I had the same issue. The highs sounded a little mushy and darker. I backed off Dirac going from 20hz to 20Khz to something like 5K, 3K, then to 1K, 500,..... at the top end. I think I settled on 1K. Play around with it.

Hello.
Have you checked if the internal filters are bypassed in DDRC-24?
I had the same issue only to find that the DDRC-24 Xover filters was enabled.

Have you tested Dirac Live 2.0?

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestion tomelyt, i will check the Xover filter setting.
I will also make a set of fresh measurements, and post the before and after curves, maybe it can help.

I am running Apple Mac with latest Catalina iOS and it is not compatible with Dirac 2.0......I hope it will change soon, therefore i can only use Dirac 1.0.

Martin

OK, here comes the screenshot from a ned set of "chair" measurements i took yesterday......honestly i really cannot hear much difference when i switch filter in and out.......but when i look of what DIRAC did with the filters i do not understand how there can be so little audiable difference.

Hi, you might want to try not boosting the 20-40 Hz range like that, it's a ported speaker (Googled it) and that will be below port resonance. I'd suggest leaving some boost in the 40-120 Hz range but let the speaker fall off below that.

Hello John,

Thank you for the suggestion, i will try that.

Before i got my DDRC24 and DIRAC Live, i played around with my minidsp 2x4 and REW EQ, on the same speakers, and when i did the analyzes and downloaded the calculated filters from REW, into the minidsp 2x4, i really could hear a much cleaner and firm bass, with no resonanses, so i expected at least similar or better from the DDRC24/DIRAC Live setup, and i was very disappointed by discovering that i nearly could not hear any difference in the sound when i swirched DIRAC on/off.

Martin

I was just wondering about that... have you measured with REW to confirm that DL really is being switched on/off? This can be more easy with a single point calibration.

Thats a good idear!
I will try to use REW to make a measurement, from 20-20 khz, with the above shown DIAC filters switched on and also bypassed, that is what you mean, right, so we can compare the curves?

Hi John,

So i tested the DIRAC filter on and off on , from yesterday in my DDRC24, with REW EQ, see below, the red curve is without my DIRAC filter, and the blue is with DIRAC filter switched on.
DIRAC seems to do some linearization, but i do not think it looks so nice from 20 hz to 200 hz......and that is where the "firm" bass should be.

It seems a little strange that Dirac has a larger cut at 65hz that is lower than red. You should really feel the thump between 50 zh to 90hz. I would expect it to have been more flat closer to 80db then dives down to mid 70db. I ended up manually raising between 40 and 90 what Dirac recommended I changed the calculated amounts between 3.5 db and 1 db. With these settings a have plenty of strong bass.

Hi steven2583a,

I agree it looks strange, do you think this cut at 65 hz is because DIRAC use a lot of attnuation of the high 46 hz resonance peak, and then this attnuation also hit the nearby 65 hz dip, so this dip gets even lower?

By the way, i am streaming the music from spotify to the ddrc24, at the sametime i am turning the filter in the ddrc24 on/off from DIRAC Live using the same usb port.......it seems to work, but i am a bit supprised that both spotify and DIRAC Live can communicate at the same time to the ddrc24........or could this be a part of the problem?
I tried to make a filter in dirac live where i cut all low frequency away below 1000 hz, and storede it in one of the four slots in the ddrc24, and when i then streamed from spotify, i could for sure hear that all bass was in and out, when i turned this filter on/off in DIRAC Live.

Not that surprising. Its the same as two applications writing to the same hard drive in the system. Or if you were n a web page playing two videos. The audio is going to the Windows/Mac sounds system. It's just a stream of bits going to the DDRC24 input modified and sending them to the output. It doesn't care what the streams are or how many.
