Laptop: MacBookPro Retina Mid 2012
OSX: 10.3.4

This as been an issue (for me) since the first version of Dirac Live I installed and since then I've upgraded both Dirac and OSX so wondering if this is related to whatever underlying framework is used to run the Dirac Live software.

This doesn't seem to affect any other applications (apart from some heavy Java apps or CPU intensive tasks like encoding) and as soon as I close Dirac Live the fans die down. I've tired everything from checking my laptop is running off the mains, resetting the SMC and PRAM, checking that it's not running a backup or anything else at the same time, physically hovering the fan ports in case they are blocked. The CPU usage doesn't seem particular high either.

Obviously this is particularly frustrating when your trying to take audio measurements in the same silent room as the laptop. Sometimes it sounds like a rocket is about to take off

I wondered if this was just an issue I was having, unique to my machine, or if others have noticed this too?

Mmm....this is a miniDSP forum, if I'm correct.
Anyway, I 'm a PC user and noted that videos, and videos only, cause my PC to overheat.
You may have a similar situation with DiracLive, but you may find more help elsewhere.

But I posted here because it’s the MiniDSP version of Dirac Live (used with a DDRC 88A), not the standalone.PC/MAC version that causes the problem.

I don't recall ever having DLCT cause heat/fan noise issues on a MacBook although I'm not sure I've used an i7 laptop to do it either. Sorry that's not very helpful. I imagine that must be macOS 10.13.4 though not OSX 10.3.4 (in case you need to raise a support ticket)

I'm wondering if it's something odd like me changing a memory setting for another app/framework (which I have long since forgotten about) that is causing DLCT to play up. The only reason I mention that is sometimes Java apps and/or software running on top of an emulation framework can cause similar fan issues, but most of the time my machine/apps are fine.

It was more a call out to see if anyone else had noticed it (and better still fixed it) or if it was just unique to my machine. Think I am a way off opening a support ticket, at least until I know this isn't just unique to me (which it may well be). But obv. any suggestions welcome!

Your machine seems to have a separate NVidia graphics processor, I'll hazard a wild guess that DLCT is making the Nvidia GPU turn on. (Java also does that, for some reason.) Or perhaps it even uses it for the filter calcs. iStat menus pro will show you which GPU is active. However, I don't think there's any way to force the extra GPU off.

@john.reekie that sounds like a pretty good wild guess to me, will give it a try later on and see if the NVidia is active/working overtime and/or if there is anyway to switch it off.

FWIW I've just recalibrated my HT with the nanoAVR DL and after every measurement it blams the processor on my wee Air (2015) up to 100% for about ten seconds. More channels than a DDRC-xy but also half the sample rate.

(Doubt that helps much, but it's a data point.)
