When I choose the IR learning features and press the buttons on the remote, the unit does not detect the signal or my remote. Is there a firmware update that will allow this to work?

Perhaps there is no need to learn the codes.

The user manual indicates “By default, the processor recognizes the Apple Remote”.

I forgot if the ATV4 is the black remote no? Unfortunately the Apple TV4 has a different set of IR code than 3. We were told by one member a while ago that the Apple TV v4 has an option to learn remote codes? That gent found a remote that does work with the nanoAVR and taught the Siri remote those commands. Workaround?
