Any way the DDRC-88A could be modified to accept 4 x S/PDIF or I2S input instead of analog?

It is supposedly a miniShark and 8x8 and the 8x8 supports I2S input and there are S/PDIF to I2S boards for it, so I am hopeful.

I'm afraid that it's not possible. The DDRC-88A is as is.
If you want to do Digital in, have a look at the DDRC-88D, it's all digital and you can just use your DAC for the outputs.

Yeah. Hmm. 4 AES/EBU DACs would not be cheap. And idneed an 8ch preamp with volume conteol. That sounds expensive. The nanoAVR approach is probably better.

But is there any chance to use I2S for the DDRC-88D?

Or is there any way how to use I2S in combination with Dirac?

Thx and greetings

Christian

I second the query about I2S I/O on the DDRC-88D. Is there a board version with this? Could there be?

Again, will it accept SPDIF subcode at AES/EBU levels? What subcode will it output in that case? The Oppo 203 with the Vanity HD board can send digital audio at AES/EBU levels, but with SPDIF subcode. Can the DDRC-88D accept this?

Dear Both

I'm afraid that it's still the same answer. No way to get I2S into a DDRC-88D as it's I2S master and would be a complete mess to have to do I2S slave + configuration the way we do on the miniSHARC. If you're after a DIY product, the Dirac Live product line isn't really a good fit as we're not allowed to resell as DIY products I'm afraid as per our licensing terms. :-(

The DDRC-88D can only accept AES-EBU levels in/out for now .SPDIF is 0.5V and too low for input circuity I'm afraid.. :-(
Not sure for the Subcodes, we can ask the engineer about this later on to run some test. Can u pls clarify which subcode info you're after and application? www.hardwarebook.info/S/PDIF#Channel_sta..._subcode_information

I don't care about the subcode beyond not wanting to have consumer SPDIF subcode cause trouble with downstream devices.

I want to take the digital audio output of an Oppo 203 4k Blue Ray player, process it with the DDRC-88D (including master volume and bass management), and distribute it to AES67-aware digital active speakers (HEDD Type 07). A Focusrite Rednet3 has the required AES/EBU and Ethernet interfaces. The Oppo 203 can be modified with a Vanity HD board to provide the requisite 4 times 2ch SPDIF outputs, that can also be driven differentially at AES/EBU levels (and adapted to XLR connectors) -- The Vanity HD supports this. But, the subcode is still consumer subcode, and I don't want this to cause problems, either with the DDRC-88D or the Focusrite Rednet3.

The only real subcode of interest is that of the format bits (professional/consumer 2ch/bitstream,etc/) and for consumer 2ch audio, the preemphasis bit. If the preemphasis bit is set, two deemphasis filters of 50 us and 15 us should be applied. This is almost never seen on modern CDs, DVDs, BDs, or 4k BDs, and could probably be ignored, but it would be a really neat trick if the DDRC-88D could select between two profiles based on it.

Another alternative is to try to strip the HDCP from the auxilliary HDMI 1.4 output (720p black + 8ch audio), convert to SDI, and use an SDI to 4 x 2ch AES/EBU audio extractor to feed the DDRC-88D. I suppose I could use a nanoAVR for bass management and another one for Dirac Live, then strip the DHCP, then convert as above, and feed the RedNet, but that's one more box than using a DDRC-88D.

The reason for I2S interest is that 4 sets of I2S signals are available on the Vanity HD board, avoiding the SPDIF vs.AES/EBU issue completely, though I understand Dirac Live licensing restrictions may prevent you from offering Dirac Live on hardware with an I2S interface. It is a ,aster interface only, so SRC is probably still required.

I’d be interest also very much in consumer spdif subcode. I now must use bulky and expensive format converters (mutec mc11+) to drive my active B&O speakers with toslink input. Simple cheap AES to toslink converter doesn’t work.

The oppo 203 and vanity board works as input source by the way.
