Surround Lft channel has random popping noise

on most sources

not affected by volume of Marantz preamp

all channels are XLR balanced

its not track changing

lound random popping sound only in that channel

wiring checks ok

latest firmware....

Im having the exact same issue with my unit, and I have just raised a ticket with the DevTeam. My system seems to have very randomized pops sometimes from the surrounds and sometimes from the fronts and subwoofers. Sometimes its about once in five seconds and sometimes twice every second. I have a Marantz AV8802a.

Hope we can get this issue resolved.

After finishing building my new speakers yesterday , I carefully setup a new calibration measurement.... This time I made sure that none of the measurement levels exceeded -12db .... this seems to have fixed the issue... no popping noises since then

Though quite honestly I was making adjustments on the fly in BM software and my gut tells me I had a crossover or mixing / router config incorrectly setup.... Im so relieved that it stopped... it was on my last nerve and was freaking my dog out - so I was ready to pull the unit and send it back as defective

I will post up any further fixes as I run across them or if I am able to duplicate the issue .....

I actually suspected an under-voltage problem in my system but the readout on my AC filtration says 118v

Please re calibrate your system with lower output settings - also experiment with the microphone input level. I really think it was some sort of clipping distortion in the way I took the measurement....

I added curtains to my media room and did another DL measurement.... the popping sound soon returned so I deleted all configurations and files...redid the test and since then no popping

Also try decreasing the VOLUME OUTPUT on the unit with the slider or Vol knob on the unit... this may be overdriving the output channels if its too high....

I have the same issue, not 100% sure if its just the left surround or left main too.
Sounds like a static discharge, but rather than the 'tick' noise that makes in real life, this is a 'pop' and sounds longer and meatier.
This happened a lot with the previous firmware/plugin - when I upgraded to the latest BM plugin and reloaded all projects the pop disappeared for some time but is now back.
It's hard to tell how often it happens, 100% of my audio goes through the 88 so I might have radio or TV on while I'm wandering about the place - I can hear the pop from a few rooms away, seems independent of my AVR volume.

I just realized that the project I had loaded was blank

If I load a project that has been setup through DLCT it pops and is now unaccepatable

DEV TEAM chime in anytime....

the popping is so bad now that I have the unit switched off

others are reporting this so Im not the only one.... DEV TEAM I have a 1000 dollar piece of gear doing nothing ... patience is wearing thin only because the sound is so bad its scaring my dog ....

My setup

Marantz 7702
Emotiva XPA7
HTPC - connected to DRC88BM via USB
ROKU4
Time Warner cable
Samsung UHD Bluray

system is XLR in/out of 88BM
firmware is new
set specs have been checked and rechecked
its like a capacitor discharging sound - snap / pop sound random times random channels

The issue has been resolved ... I believe that the gain structure was being over driven - though i was careful in taking measurements - after new DLCT measurement the issue is resolved and sound is fantastic....

There should definately be some notation in the instruction manual against levels being too high... I am aware that it make minor mention of this.... but this could potentially have damaged all my new tweeters (disaster)

Great to hear you've fixed your issue. Can you explain where in the signal chain the gain was too high please?

I hate to sound stupid but Im totally unsure where the gain was over driven .... I deleted all my previous config files - I guess I should have sent one in to be examined ....

Thanks for the comment - i was very close to selling the unit and moving on ....

Next Im gonna experiment with REW but definately have a solid CONFIG file to fall back on....

No worries.
Did miniDSP support suggest that gain was overdriven?
I guess that either Dirac settings and/or plugin setting were the culprit if you didn't have to make any other changes other that redo the measurements and configs.

Dear All

Sorry for missing this thread.
- We indeed already chatted with rts100x5 on a dedicated tech support ticket suggesting few ideas. glad to hear that the issue is solved. Having the files is much easier for us to troubleshoot. Please remember to keep files guys. Thanks!
- @ astr0b0y, did you already create a tech support ticket? If not, please do so.

One of the core reasons we see popping noise happen is down to 2 things:
- CAUSE#1: Overdriving of the gain structure. We've seen a lot of our customer settting the DSP for 0.9Vrms yet using an AVR that outputs circa 2Vrms on the SUB out. That's for sure going to clip the DSP by the time it reaches the Dirac Live tuning. A great article on this is here:
www.minidsp.com/applications/home-theate...ture-of-the-ddrc-88a
Along with our user manual on this important topic.
Key is the fact that our engineers spent lots of hours adding RMS metering POST and PRE Dirac (see Dirac Tab). It's key that you monitor these levels to check what you're feeding.

- CAUSE#2: Incorrect steps when doing the Dirac Live calibration (i..e overdriving during the sweeps). It is hard to reproduce here so best to rerun a measurement if it ever happens and make 100% sure you follow all steps of gain structure as per our manual.

As usual, we're here to help and remember that we can't always track all forum. A tech support ticket, your project file + DDRC-88BM configuration file is key.

I can understand if there were some signal passing through the DRC88BM and that signal was clipping and causing a popping sound ...

Tell me why my system has popping sounds when nothing is playing....

I too hear the same discharge pops regardless of input volume from my AVR, source or lack of.
Haven't raised a ticket yet but plan on it as soon as I find a minute :)
