I am thinking of purchasing the software for one of my DDRC-88A units (I have 2), and use it to replace my Xilica crossover. This would mean I would be using one unit for bi-amping my front 3 channels, and for 2 DTS-10 subs, with the other unit for my Atmos, and surrounds.

Questions:
1: With the DDRC-88M software, can I do a 10hz High Pass 24 dB/Butterworth for my subs?
2: If I use the DDRC-88m software, can I use it for Atmos (ceiling mounted), and surround channels (wall mounted) (same DDRC-88A unit), or will it be a problem due to the angles?

Ron

1. You can program that filter into it but at such a low frequency the response might not be exact. A bit tricky to measure too...
2. I don't have Atmos but I'd suggest trying the normal 90 degree file and tilting the response of the ceiling speaker down a bit about say 5 kHz in the target curve.

I was told previously that if you use 2 88A boxes they both have to have the same firmware... Does this mean both boxes need to have the 88M upgrade too?

actually it should work that only one of the units has the upgrade for the subs

they don´t have to have the same firmware as they dont communicate with each other

but what you have to think of, that only one unit will make the crossover and the other unit will not cut the low hz
and i dont know how much delay the A unit makes to the different channels, in the BM unit you can see the delay to the different speakers

If I upgrade both units, I could see the delays for all the channels. Maybe I should run my AVP first to see what the delays would be, and set all the surrounds as small. My AVP has dual sub outs... I could run one sub to the first one , and put one surround channel on it too, then put the other sub on the 2nd one(using the remaining 7 channels for the 3 surrounds, and 4 Atmos channels. By doing this I could check the delays for the surround on one unit, and also see the other surround channel on the 2nd unit (this should tell me how much they are off.

@ Nidary is indeed correct. You don't need to upgrade both units.
There will be a minor difference in delay but anyway you seem to have figured this out already. You're aware of Keith's app note on that topic. Right? (www.minidsp.com/support/community-powered-tutorials click at top)

A few questions...as i am a little confused with the routing/mixing/bass management with a bi-amped setup going through the 88M

I have my crossover setup on the 88M. Input 1 going to the bass bin, and horn output to 1, and 2. Input 2 is blank. Input 3 is for the sub. Input 4 is for the bass bin, and horn output to 4, and 5. Input 5 is blank. Input 6 is for the bass bin, and horn output to 6, and 7 outputs.

Here is the Mixing page I have setup so far. I have it set to correspond to the crossover settings.

Here is the Routing page. Not sure what I should do here should it be the same as the mixing page?

LFE Management page. Since I am using my box for the front 3 channels, and subs only... What do I do here (my surrounds, and Atmos will be on a 2nd 88A box)?

I am really anxious to get this up and running, but the above 3 areas have me concerned, and i need to know what is the correct way to approach this.

tia,
Ron

Can someone explain to me what the difference is between Routing, and
Mixing? With a Bi-amp setup should they both be set the same?

I will have to come back and take a closer look but quick thoughts -

* Your Mixer screen looks correct to me
* You will be connecting only inputs 1, 3, 4, and 6, so it might help to change the input labels (e.g. -- or "unused" or something)
* Routing screen : While it will make no difference, you can turn off the matrix for the unused inputs
* Routing screen : Turn off LFE In 1 -> Dirac 3 and turn on LFE Mgt -> Dirac 3
* LFE Mgt: it makes no real difference but you can turn off mixing for the unused inputs i.e. FR In, SL In, RL In, RR In

PS the recommended order for doing things is

1. Output channels set up (crossover, measure etc)
2. Dirac Live calibration
3. Set up BM / "LFE Mgt"

I have heard from another Beta tester of the BM upgrade that there is (or was) a bug in the software which causes the Dirac calibration measurement sweeps to go through bass management, which they shouldn't. Is this why you recommend setting up bass management after running the Dirac calibration, to avoid the bug?

Were you aware of this bug, and do you know if it has been fixed yet?

Hi Jerry, I assume people would use an external measuring program (REW etc) while configuring their PEQ and crossovers, and then again while fine-tuning their bass management. The external program can only go through the inputs.... Therefore:

1. Output channels
2. Dirac Live
3. Bass management.

Hi, this is inconsistent with your Routing screen. For the sake of clarity at least, it would be better to modify this screen to use input channels 1, 3, 4 and 6.

Or, modify the whole setup so that channels 1-4 are used up until the mixing screen, and reroute Dirac 1-4 to the outputs there. [Edit: this approach would probably be less confusing actually - connect inputs as Left, Right, LFE, Center. If you're still stuck later tonight (my time) I'll try to put a config.]

No disrespect, but you really didn't answer the question. First of all, can we agree that Dirac Live calibration sweeps should not be subjected to bass management? The measurement sweeps should measure each speaker at its full range.

My question was, are you aware that the initial beta of the BM upgrade had a bug that routed the Dirac measurement sweeps through the bass management of the 88A (which is wrong), and do you know if this issue has been fixed? Perhaps this question would be better answered by the Dev Team.
