Is there a 10 dB limit (or any other limit) on the amount of bass boost can can be applies?

While 10db is indeed possible, 10dB boost (say "above" the measurement of an actual speaker)wouldn't be recommended as you're basically trying to "boost" your system above its typical response (and you may damage your system, or just overdrive inside the DSP) .

Best that you just "amplifier your sub (i..e at the actual amplifier) by boosting its actually amplifier volume so you achieve a similar result. Then you don't have to boost so much inside the DSP.
