Hi,

Just cranked up my new DDRC-22D today and I have what is probably a naive question.......what volume setting should I have on the unit for playback? I assumed it would just be 100 but every picture I seem to see on the net shows -6dB or similar - am I missing something here?

Edit: My setup is Auralic Aries>>DDRC-22D>>Auralic Vega DAC>>Integrated amp. So there are (4) volume controls in the chain. Does the volume control on the DDRC have any effect on SQ? Does attenuation make sure there is no digital clipping in the DAC?

Also: After some initial playing around I realised I didn't have the latest firmware installed so I upgraded from 2.16 to 2.17 and it is MUCH louder. With 2.16 the volume in my setup with and without Dirac was pretty similar, now it is very different. Is that the way it is supposed to be?

@Wanta911,

The attenuation can come from 2 places:
- default attenuation that we put in place for Dirac to be able to get some extra headroom to boost the level
- Calibration specific (i.e. based on your measurement) attenuation that will basically get derived by Dirac's Algorithm.

I believe that in 2.16 to 2.17, we modified the default attenuation. Also make sure that at the end of the calibration step (last step when you drag&drop), you make sure that your fader is at max.

So, just to be sure, to have no added attenuation and in the same time no clipping, in the final screen (when you charge the profiles on the miniDSP 22) one has to set to max the slider that by default is set to -6? And the master volume (the pysical volume on the unit) set to Max? Are these two separated controls by the way?

Are the equalization and curves automatically generated at a level to avoid clipping?

Thank you!

@ Mattia

These are the same controls (master volume on Dirac and master volume on front panel). So no need to look at it this way.
Also note that since the latest DDRC-22 utility, you do have control over the amount of attenuation via a drop down menu. Worth for you to tweak if you feel a need to apply extensive boost in your target curve. If all is good, don't touch anything. :-)

So even if I set the volume to 100%, I don't risk any clipping because the equalization and curve are calculated to avoid it?

Thank you,
Mattia

In v1.05 of the configuration tool set volume to 100% and the attenuator at -10dB.
This should be enough to play with your target curve settings before clipping.

Hi there,
Is there a way to fix the outpup volume at 100% ?

Yes, this is not really a problem, I just want to know if it's possible to fix the volume at 100% and make impossible to change it when I touch the master volume on front panel...

@ sergioredshoes

No way to lock the volume control I'm afraid. Just don't touch that knob.. :-)
