DDRC-22A in a HT : latency ? 8 years 7 months ago #15998

Hi,

I plan to buy a DDRC-22A to mainly improve my hifi listening experience (I've tried the PC version before and I loved the result). I would include it between my preamp (McIntosh C2500) and my amps (McIntosh MC501).

But, as my system is also used for HT, I am wondering about the latency induced by the DDRC-22A. Do I have the risk of an audible delay between my mains and the center chanel ?

Thanks

Dirac Live uses a unique and patented FIR + IIR filters structure which allows to reach the best possible results with much lower latency than other FIR only solutions.

@ Jumper,

Following Flavio's comment, we can indeed confirm that the structure of Dirac Live's algorithm has an overall latency, much lower than typical FIR only solutions.
In the case of the DDRC, that latency is 26mS which is really minor. You talk of a center channel, is that a multichannel setup? If so, maybe the nanoAVR could be a better fit?

Hi DevTeam

Really interested in the nanoAVR Dirac Live's version and was wondering, would you have these units to buy and ship by the end of the month? As I placed an order for a UMIK-1 and its finally hit my country and should get it tomorrow to try with Dirac Live trial to see if it improves my HT system.

Could you tell me what the latency of the nanoAVR is just for the picture output as I will have my PS4 connected to it and latency is a problem for gaming.

Thanks a lot!

Many thanks for your answer.
I think that nanoAVR is not the answer for me, my system is a hifi system, used sometimes in a Home Theater.
Anyway, now that I know the latency, I can still correct the distance (in my AV amplifier) of my center chanel to neutralize it.
If I do the math (and if I am not wrong), 1 cm should do the trick (being 0.34 ms), I am not sure that I will hear any difference

May be I have learned a different math or I am wrong in any other way, but velocity of air is 340 meters per second, which is identical to 34 centimeters per millisecond, resulting into 34x26 cm = 8,84 m for 26 ms.

@ HM4nine is indeed correct. It think that the math got skewed somewhere.. :-)
Here is an easy online calculator: www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-soundpath.htm
The total length will be 8.84m. For your hybrid setup, that would be an issue I think unless you timealign the other speakers as well. (another DDRC or an OpenDRC used for delay/eq only)

I am the same boat as topic starter. I have HT setup and Stereo. I wonder what happens if Dirac filters disengaged - do we still have a latency? I am thinking to use for HT (multichannel) equalization build in processors, but for Stereo listening engage DDRC-22A..

Hello,

If you're doing the bypass from the IR remote/front panel of a loaded Dirac configuration, you will almost have zero delay because there is a MUX inside the DSP structure, completely bypassing the DIRAC path. The latency will be very minimal in the order of few ms (e.g. 1~2ms) for the IO and buffering mostly,

If we're to re-calibrate the AV amp again after installing the DDRC, will the re-calibration of the AV amp take care of this delay/latency issue ?

@ tane0019,

Mmmh, not sure to understand what you mean by "recalibrate the AV AMP"... What setup are we talking about here?
I'm not sure what you AV amp will do, but if you modify gains (i.e. inc/dec levels without separation). THat's fine.
If you were to modify the L&R balance, you will need to rerun your DDRC-22
If you were to modify a lot the AV amp (whatever that is :-) , AV receiver I'm guessing?), then you may be better off to rerun your test basically.

Hi "devteam"

Don't quite understand what you mean above.

From what I understand from reading this thread, once we calibrate the stereo channels with DDRC and later intergrade the LR into a Home Theatre setup, there will be a slight delay in response coming out of the L/R channels with respect to the rest of the HT channels because of the signal going through the DDRC unit. (or is my understanding of the whole situation wrong ??)

If the understanding is correct, then by re-calibrating the AV receiver (via their in-built software, ie mainly audyssey base), it should be able to correct the L/R delay problem, right ?
