Does the USBStreamer B or any other hardware offer the possibility of SPDIF input and USB output or is the USB interface only for input? I am aware the 2x4HD can do it, but it resamples everything to the one sample rate. I was looking for something that simply converts spdif to USB at its native sample rate lossless.

EDIT: Since it's apparently not clear, I want something that accepts coaxial or optical input and then can output that stream unmodified to USB.

What makes you think a 2x4 HD could do this? As far as I'm aware its USB port can:t be used as a digital output.

It's on the description:
www.minidsp.com/products/minidsp-in-a-box/minidsp-2x4-hd
But as I said that's not a solution to what I'm trying to experiment with.

Not quite sure which bit you're looking at but I own a 2x4 HD and don't believe it's possible to send a signal from the Toslink input to the USB as an output. I thought you were after conversion from an RCA SPDIF input actually? A 2x4 HD doesn't even have one.

I realise you'd discounted this option but I wouldn't want your post to mislead anyone else reading this thread.

Yes I meant toslink.

The 2x4HD link says:
USB Audio Class 2 Bidirectional streaming with ASIO drivers, driverless under MAC OSx

it also says lower down:
USB audio I/O

and then
Asynchronous USB Audio Class 2 Bidirectional streaming with ASIO drivers under Windows, driverless under MAC OSx

And the manual says:
The USB is used for:
• Configuration and real-time control of the miniDSP 2x4 HD,
• Streaming audio from a computer or other device such as a music streamer, at up to 192 kHz, and
Streaming the processed audio (four output channels) from the miniDSP 2x4 HD to the computer.

Looks pretty convincing to me?

I must admit I didn't know the manual said that. I wonder if it's significant it says 'to the computer' rather than to a USB DAC?

Most likely, but that's all I want it for in my experimenting: to capture an SPDIF stream on PC (but without sample rate conversion.)

It might be worth editing your first post to make it clear what you are after, which if I'm following you now is a device that will accept a Toslink input and then output the signal to a computer via USB at the original sample rate? I'd be surprised if anyone realised this was what you had in mind :) .

Really? Okay will do. Actually I'd be happy with either coaxial or optical (both are actually SPDIF.)

Yes, I realise, which was why I have been explicitly stating Toslink or RCA to try to be clear what you were after :) . Most of the time people tend to mean RCA in my experience which was why my original guess was this was what you wanted.

So I purchased one myself to answer the question myself and the answer is "partially".

The device is detected as an Xmos device on USB does indeed advertise that it can return data over USB at sample rates up to 192,000.
Device: hw:CARD=USBStreamer (type: HW)
Access types: MMAP_INTERLEAVED RW_INTERLEAVED
Formats: S32_LE
Channels: 2
Sample rates: 44100 48000 88200 96000 176400 192000
Interrupt interval: 125-1486078 us
Buffer size: 83-2972155 us

When I experimented with it, it generated 32bit streams of data at whatever sample rate was requested regardless of the incoming data sample rate. There was no sample rate conversion which was exactly what I was looking for. Some trickery is required in code to detect that the incoming data isn't exactly the sample rate you set if the upstream sample rate changes but that's not a showstopper.

There was one big problem though - although it supports up to 192, going above 176 did NOT work, and just captured silence. I have confirmed that the device that was sending the data over toslink did correctly send 24/192 data by playing it to a DAC. That's a little disappointing but I guess I wasn't expecting much from such an affordable device, though what it does is pretty straight forward.
