When using a cal file, I would suggest pointing it directly between the speakers. Without a cal file, pointing it at "random incidence" 72 degrees from horizontal may work well, although I have to yet to confirm this.

Also, when starting and becoming familiar with the behavior of your room, it's a good idea to place the mic in several positions around the listening area, to understand how the measurement varies.

If your listening chair is solid like a sofa, you may want to move it out of the way.

As John already answered:

- If using the Umic without calibration you should use it facing up to the ceiling (WM61a capsule is developed to be flat for diffuse field / random incidence).

- If you use the provided calibration file face it directly to the source (or just inbetween both speakers if you measure a stereo setup).

Probably a silly question but when measuring a sub do I point the UMIK-1 at the sub or at the ceiling? Also if measuring dual subs together what is the mic orientation?

at low frequencies (say below a few kHz) those Mics are onmidirectional and thus the orientation does not influence the measurement at all. Only at higher frequencies (where the wavelength is similar to the umics mic dimensions = a few mm) some directivity starts to appear.

What about a 5.1 setup for Dirac Live?

Hi kathampy,

If you're referring to the NanoAVR-DL which has the 5.1/7.1 Dirac Live room equalization, refer to page 23 of the preliminary owner's manual. It says for the microphone to be pointed vertically (towards the ceiling or floor).

Sorry to reply to this old Tread.
The position for the UMIK-1 is not realy clear for me.
I have to calc files, one normal and one 90°.
If I want to use the normal Calc file in REW and want to measure one Speaker what is the correct position ?
Straight, pointing to the cone of the Speaker, like in Picture one?

Thanks a lot to make it clear!

What are you trying to do? I doubt you can measure just the speaker unless you have an anechoic chamber and appropriate equipment.

For the purpose of room analysis you need to keep it at the listening position. The normal file requires the mic to be pointed to the ceiling and is suitable for multi-channels setups. For plain stereo you can use the 90 degree file and point the mic forwards towards the centre, not towards a speaker.

Thanks for your reply,
I want to correct the speaker, because the box is to small for the Speaker. Even I have to work with some Capacity (GHP) or I can correct it with the miniDSP, that i want to figure out.
I know normally I need anechoic chamber, but I want to measure as best I can here with this quit room.

The other thing I have to measure it the time between the mid and low speaker, so I can adjust the Boxes to a zero timeline. But don´t know how!

As you recognize I'm absolutely new in measurement and need a lot of help.

The normal file requires the mic to be pointed to the ceiling

Are you sure about that?

Below is a graph of the cal files. You can see that the mike is not very accurate as it approaches 20K in the 90 degree file. This would suggest that the 90 degree file is the one to be used when mike is pointing to the ceiling.

None of the umik articles here that I read say which way to point the mike.
