Hi all.

Recently I bought UMIK-1 as I plan to play with room correction. I have a lot to learn, but hopefully various materials, articles and how-tos on various sites should enable me (at some point...) to understand what I'm exactly doing and why. Anyway, after the purchase I plugged the microphone into my laptop and I've found that when recording some sample sounds it is much (much) more 'quiet' then e.g. the built-in laptop microphone. Pardon my ignorance, but is it normal? For now I just want to confirm that everything is right with the microphone.

I've tested it on two different computers, both under Windows and Linux. I may test under Mac, but I don't expect it to be any different.

I can provide some sample recordings, but the difference is really big.

Honestly I don't know and what you're getting may well depend on how the microphone is configured on your computer. Rather than spending time worrying about this though I'd suggest you focus on how to get the microphone to work with Room EQ Wizard and if you get sensible results with it.
