I need to buy a longer USB cable (around 16 ft/ 5.5. meters) because I run my mac mini headless and the listening position is about 12 feet (4 meters) from my machine. I have two questions:
1) I looked on the web at longer cables, but I'm not sure what connectors I need to hook up the UMIK-1 with my mac. What type of connectors/termination do I need?

2) Is this length too long? If so what should I look for?

1) 4m "should" work fine but not fully tested to be honest. You're on your own a bit to try. USB Type A on one side, miniUSB on the other side.
2) There are some "USB balun" which are cable extenders. It will work fine and that was tested by quite few people already.
