Yes please. Seconded - but as an input to the flex.

Isn't hdmi eARC the new optical?

Possibly for AV applications but definitely not for stereo music systems. Also, I use the Toslink out from my TV to my SHD and would prefer this to being forced to use HDMI.

In the TV scenario, HDMI would probably be better than Toslink as it would enable seamless integration.

EG: If the SHD supported HDMI/CEC, you could simply use your TV remote to easily control the volume (and power if wanted) without any difficulty/IR codes/other remotes.

In my particular situation I wouldn't want to use HDMI as I'm using the four HDMI ports on my TV for other things plus I have zero desire for my TV to have the ability to turn my SHD on or off.

My main point though was that for the core user group of miniDSPs HDMI ports basically don't exist (other than for I2S I guess).

I can only say: Yes please, +1 for HDMI EARC, and therefore simple volume control.

please don't create this straw man argument☝🏼

No strawman here at all. I simply responded to the notion that HDMI had taken over from optical. Obviously I'd have no issue with HDMI simply being an additional input and I didn't say I would.

Checking back to the first post though I see this asked specifically about adding an HDMI input on a 2x4 HD. This device is actually now longer being sold by miniDSP so I think we can safely rule that out. The model that has replaced it is the Flex. On all models though there would be a question of space to fit an HDMI socket and so we coul be in the position of asking what has to be traded off to make space for an HDMI input...

when i go to the product section it's still available for 225! where did you get that they're not selling it?
that would be sad news imo the flex is 495 which is more than 2x the price!
also what's the point of having both optical and coaxial?

Actually you're right on the first point. Thought I'd seen the 2x4 HD disappear at one point but I may just have got that wrong to be honest. Definitely available currently as you say. It will be interesting to see if it continues to be sold alongside the Flex long term or not.

Re. coax and Toslink inputs I used both in my system at one point: I had a CD transport connected using the coax digital input and my TV using Toslink. For stereo music systems there will be people who still have use for either of these so they're certain no redundant. Literally yesterday on another forum I was talking with someone who wanted coax for a CD player and Toslink to connect a streamer for example. Equally there are some with CD transports that only have Toslink outputs so the choice can still be useful.

Edit: Oh, and no, I don't believe we do have the ability to delete posts here I'm afraid.

Actually above I think I was getting mixed up with the 2x4 no longer being sold, rather than the 2x4 HD ever having not been listed. I do still wonder whether it has a long term future though.

and you're ok with other ppl wanting both optical and coax but i can't have hdmi🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

You asked what the point of having both coax and optical was, so I gave you an answer  . That has nothing to do with somehow denying you what you want.

Some good news for you today  .

Looks like a possibly interesting additional product for me actually, to potentially use in combination with my SHD should I wish to go down the surround sound route for movies/gaming.

this new Flex HT looks absolutely amazing but DAMN do I wish it had digital outputs.  I have been banging my head against the wall for years trying to regain volume control over the digital audio coming out of my Apple TV home theatre.  I have a wonderful setup using a nanoDIGI feeding all my speakers with my preferred DACs and amps.  Some of the optical lines run 20meters before dropping into their DAC/amps.  If this Flex HT had digital outputs like some of the other Flex series does, it would SOLVE YEARS OF HEADACHES.

@devteam please consider a Flex HT with digital outs. I would be first in line.  *prayer hands*
