SHD should remember volume for each input (health hazard!) 5 months 1 week ago #59669

I'm both really happy and disappointed with my new SHD.
I need vastly different volumes per input, because of various sources for which I cannot control the volume.
E.g. I need -6dB on XLR, but -50dB on USB. Doing this manually every time I switch input is both annoying and dangerous (because of high volumes).
This should be very easy to implement.
Thanks!

You could have different gains set on different configs. It's not ideal but is there a way you could make that work for you?

-50dB sounds a lot though. Can you adjust the output level of your sources?

Thanks, but I cannot use the gains, as I need all 4 preset slots already (I assume that's what you mean?) - also it's still very dangerous if you forget to change preset or accidently change it during listening (a ~44dB jump).
Furthermore I would have to make everything a lot quieter except XLR which causes other problems and quality loss.
I use the XLR input for my multichannel AV system, so it's already volume controlled and therefore quite low (I already used max. gain of 10dB on my AVR and made other channels -9dB, but that's still not enough), but still, different sources have vastly different levels and all preamps, AVRs, etc. I know remember volume per input, it's such a basic feature.

Could you try RCA out of your AVR? Typically they're at a lower voltage level.

Edit
Ignore that. Realised that goes the wrong way.. You're trying to make the AVR input louder right?

Thanks again, but yes, AVR volume is way too low, so RCA would make it even worse. Also I believe it would yield 6dB, which is not a lot compared to the ~50dB I would need.

Hi sblive,
it is possible to regulate volume through the volumio REST API from external.
volumio.github.io/docs/API/REST_API.html
That isn't a very easy solution, but you can set an address where the volumio pushes
changes to the config to an url. There you could use the information to set volume according to the input
by invoke a curl command with something like this:

http://<ip or name of your volumio>/api/v1/commands/?cmd=volume&volume=30

I use it thru my SmartHome System to set the right volume when I change the input.

But I assume it should be possible to add some code to the volumio inputs plugin to add default volumes to every input.
