Cannot connect - Mac 12 years 7 months ago #1881

:S Hi,

I finally got my MiniDSP in a box after waiting a long time due to out-of-stock issues. I've been trying to connect it to the mac for a few hours now, reading all the troubleshooting threads in the forum. But nothing seems to work. Reinstalled the plugin (MiniDSP-2waySUBAdv.app).

This is what the mac says about the connected item:

Product ID: 0x003f
Vendor ID: 0x04d8 (Microchip Technology Inc.)
Version: 0.02
Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
Location ID: 0xfa140000
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): Unknown (Device has not been configured)

I get the attached window when trying to sync. The the dreaded "Cannot connect to DSP, please plug in the board"

What to do?!

I could add that it's a brand new MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.6. All USB port works fine with other gadgets. The blue led is pulsating fine inside the case.

Please help, i've been waiting so long for this.

Fredrik,

Mmh, seems odd indeed. I wonder if it could be related to a permission issue since the software doesn't seem like it started a background application. Please try the following:
- Un-install the miniDSP software from your application folder (i.e. remove the whole folder)
- Download again the miniDSP plug-in from the website
- Install the plug-in
- It will start right away after installation. Press Command + Q to quit the application.
- Start again the application and try to connect.

Let us know how this go,

Hi, thanks for reply.

Unfortunately that didn't seem to work for me. I did all the steps outlined - same problem. I then tried a "repair file permissions" on the entire HD and tried with a different usb-cable. But I still get the same message. On one or two occasions I got a timeout error instead of the usual cannot connect.

I've now checked with another Mac user whos board works fine. In his System Profiler shows up like this:

MiniDSP v1:

Product ID: 0x003f
Vendor ID: 0x04d8 (Microchip Technology Inc.)
Version: 0.02
Speed: Up to 12 Mb/sec
Manufacturer: DSP4YOU LTD.
Location ID: 0x1a200000
Current Available (mA): 500
Current Required (mA): 100

Which is different from mine posted above. Could it be that the board was not properly configured before it was sent to me?

I had that issue & tried pressing the reset button on the board which worked for me but the Devteam didn't seem to think it should be necessary.

I assume you have the software running, plug in the board & then try to sync?

I've tried all possible ways to sync it. App first, then plug in, then sync. PLug in first, the app, then sync. Waiting a while and syncing straight away. Nothing.

Havent pressed the rese since this is the boxed in version. I suppose I could loosen all the screws and find inside, but I rather not try that.

Success! I got it working.

Fired up the old Win XP and after som installing and uninstalling of the plugin somehow got it to connect! Ideally I'd like to get it working on the Mac since I can't move the PC to the room where the stereo is and configurate while listening - but this will have to do for now.

Fredrik,

Glad to hear that you got it working though we understand that it's not optimal.
Being back from Chinese New Year, we investigated a bit more today and realized that 10.6.4/10.6.5 (our dev environment) works perfectly fine. However from a quick investigation upgrading to OSX 10.6.6 released in January doesn't. We're going to have a closer look in the next few days to see what could be the cause. Hopefully, not major rework...

Why did apple changed something that worked perfectly well before is a bit of a mystery, but I guess that it's the reality of following up OS updates! :-)

We'll keep you updated shortly.

Heh, yeah - Apple is not always known for placing nice with developers unfortunately. But nice to hear you're on the case. Good luck and thanks for your help!

Fredrik,

Just a quick follow up on this issue...
After some investigation and an upgrade of our Mac Book to the latest 10.6.6, we can't reproduce the problem anymore.. i.e. all miniDSP tested are indeed discovered correctly and working fine on OSx 10.6.6.

Our initial comment on the issue with 10.6.6 proved to be incorrect as we clicked on the "software update" button and it seems solved the solved the issue.

Could you please get in touch by email with our team to let us know if you're still having some issues with your MacBook?

thanks

Hi,

I tried it last week with the updated plugin and it still didn't work. If time permits I will download the new plugin that came out a few days ago and give it another try tonight. I'll send you the results as soon as I have something.

And thanks for you support!

I'm also having this problem. I've tried the latest version of the plugin and it will not connect with my Mac. I reported the same problem earlier and suspected it was a hardware problem, but it is not. It's related to OS X 10.6.6. I installed Windows on a partition on the same machine and the plugin software connects fine and I can program the board. The problem I have is my measurement software runs on OS X and I want to be able to run both at the same time so I can make adjustments while I'm testing.

I'm using the latest 1.0.5 Advanced 2-Way plug in. I've tried reinstallation, reseting the board, a USB hub, a windows VM running on the mac, and nothing is working when booted into OS X.

Hello,

Mmmh, this is odd.. Could you please send us by email a screenshot of the system profilers (Application - >Utilities - > System profiler) showing the USB device for the minIDSP? Here is our email address: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

FYI, we're still not able to reproduce this symptom on our Macbook although we're working with 10.6.6.. The current reason is most likely because we upgraded our Mac from an old Mac OSx version and that some file maybe stayed in the MAC.. miniDSP worked perfectly fine with all Mac for the past year, so Apple did something since 10.6.6 and must have messed up something else .

We have our engineers on the case so we'll let you know what comes out. Note that it has nothing to do with the plug-in but more with the HID device. You'll notice on google that as a manufacturer, we're not the only HID device having trouble... Hence, more a general issue that we need to understand what Apple modified.

Thanks for your patience, we'll keep you updated.
