Why is the filter configuration looking like it does? I dont understand the relation between bypass and the resulting output.

With both Bypass button disabled, (not pressed in/not grey), you basically have both filters enabled.
I.e. you have a Low pass filter and High pass filter both at the same frequency! (400Hz)
So indeed, it looks like something a bit odd since it's not something you would ever use in any real system.. :-)

Typically, you would only need the Low pass OR high pass.. In other words, at least one filter need to be bypassed. If you don't really know basics of filters (LPF/HPF), easiest is to not play with the bypass.. reset your config back to default and simply use the default configuration ( bypass correctly configured). You can then just change the cut off frequency.
