Made my ticket. Response from Minidsp:
"THanks for the feedback. Unfortunately we have removed these settings indeed... The brightness should be hard locked now to save the display."

So you did ask for the option to keep the display turned on for longer or for ever? It would be interesting what they answered regarding the option to turn off the screen much quicker than 2 minutes…

What's the advantage of the new software anyway?

Currently not that much I think. Firmware and DSP Updates (maybe volumio, too?) are maybe a bit easier to apply because everything is done via DC now.

But one day there might come this one important update to support a changed third party API (qobuz, tidal, spotify, dirac) or a cool new feature arises that you want…

For streaming it's the volumio part of the miniDSP. Nothing to do with the device console I think. Updates for volumio and all streaming capabilities are done over the volumio part (by volumio app or browser on the little streamer inside the miniDSP). So updates for tidal, qobuz, ... are all done by volumio.

Device Console is for configuration of the DSP chip.
That's why you still have to connect an extra USB cable to the miniDSP for configuration. The streamer inside has no real connection to the DSP chip.
At least no connection for programming the DSP. It's limited to the functionality of the remote you could say.

If there is not a very interesting function in the device console that is not available over the old app, than I won't update to DC.

@itskaefer is right that Device Console doesn't change the way that Volumio updates are instigated, which remains from within Volumio itself. There has been at least one previous Volumio update that was associated with a required firmware change though so these can't be guaranteed to be independent in the future.

A big concern long term could be compatibility with future Windows/Mac OS changes.

As of right now there is no strong reason for anyone who is concerned by the display change to migrate to using DC though.

yeah well they fixed some bugs with the remote control as far as I know. And the code in volumio which controls or reads the remote Input was really buggy. And still is! But know it works for the most part so no one complains about.

But well you're right. maybe there will be a dependency between firmware and volumio version.
But you probably still can upgrade the firmware with the old tool.

Is the device console able to upgrade the DSP Firmware or do you still have to upgrade with the upgrade tool?

Is the device console able to upgrade the DSP Firmware or do you still have to upgrade with the upgrade tool?

The example I can remember for certain was associated with the Roon acreditation and the change to volume control implementation. It also added the Surface Dial support.

For upgrading using the old tool to be even a possibility will require the upgrade files to be made available for download, which I'd expect is not something miniDSP intend to do. Device Console completely replaces the old update tool.

Just realised I missed the more important point  . Applying a firmware update will change the display behaviour to what people are trying to avoid!

For what it's worth: I've been asking the company about the price tag for a replacement display and switching back to the old software. My idea was to switch back to the previous software and having a display at home if mine abandons me in a couple of years (hopefully not in months!, I bought the machine 05/2021). Response:

"A new screen will be 30USD + shipping cost.

With this said, please note that we would really recommend not switching back to older software/firmware this being said as you'd potentially loose support for new feature of any firmware bug fix. From the point on that you're running an older firmware/software, unfortunately we wouldn't be able to help if there is some issues found (E.g BUG). All customers are being moved to new firmware/software that we're pushing from there on.. It's impossible to test an Old DSP firmware with a new XMOS firmware with an old Volumio.. There would be an infinite number of combinations and potential issues and there are some very complex interlinking between each piece of code (Software/Firmware).. Just a warning, :-) "

I didn't take any decision so far.

My next preoccupation with the SHD is rather visual. The front plate starts presenting different colour levels of black/grey....

I wonder if this might be a direct replacement for the SHD's display. Having to see mine with it's burnt-in old Dirac logo is really starting to bug me.

Sorry for bringing an old thread back to life, but where is the option to set the display darken timeout in the new DC?
(FLEX DL and 2x4HD).
Can't find anything about it in the User Guide.

BTW those new 'on line' user guides are a huge step backwards IMO.
After several tries I managed to save it in PDF form, so at least I can do a global search if I am looking for a specific item.
@miniDSP: please Google 'user friendly'.

Jan,

That query has been answered numerous times in this thread already.  Display off is now hard-coded to two minutes.
I find that too long......but I can live with it.

OK. I did read about it but found the info confusing.
Thanks for clarifying.

@jan.didden, @dreite,
If you haven't already, it's probably worth dropping an email to support to let them know you'd like the ability to adjust how long the display stays on for and it's brightness. I suspect if enough people ask, support will address the request in a future update but not if they think everyone is happy with the new restrictions.

I understand that longer on-times would damage the display, so that would mean it's a no-no.
Or a new dispaly.
