What’s interesting is that the Room signal path shows that Roon signal path shows no degradation with Roon’s volume leveling, but potentially some loss from the SHDs DSP volume - since both are digital volume adjustments, wouldn’t it be better if Roon did both the volume leveling and volume control?

Theoretically it is best to do attenuation as late as possible in a signal chain, gain as early as possible in a signal chain. Since the SHD Volume control usually attenuates it appears to be better placed than Roon to do attenuation.

It is good that Roon certification is finally here. After using the system about half a day, I notice 2 issues.

1. Play button does not work. It is really disappointing that this basic functionality is not present, especially after the certification process took so long.
2. Putting SHD to sleep does not pause the stream.

@devteam, are you aware of these issues and are you working on fixing them?


 

To be clear:

- if you use the web interface to the SHD, play button doesn't work

- if you use the Roon app (iPhone, iPad, Mac.. for me) the play button works fine

The volume control doesn't "work" in the sense it has no effect on output volume. The volume control is - correctly - done in the SHD, and so you need to turn the SHD volume knob or use the remote. I would imagine that doing this is feasible in the near future - unless it requires recertification, which might be too expensive (tho' it should be useful infrastructure for other minds products)

It would be nice if the SHD's volume *could * be controlled via the Roon app interface, but at least this correctly preserves music data.

Of course, play button in Roon always used to work, even with Volumio plugin. By "play button" I meant "play button on SHD remote" (or SHD web interface, even though that is not really a use case for me).

The play button **does** work, as does the pause button.

The volume control does, however, behave as described - ie, it changes, but actual sound volume doesn't change, just like in the Roon app

That's not my experience.  Setting volume within Roon to Device volume allows either Roon or the Remote or nob to control volume, which is reflected both in Roon and On the SHD.  Setting the roon volume to fixed, means only the nob and remote will control volume. whichever is chosen the volume appears to be managed by the SHD.

@petewilson Sorry you're right, play button in SHD web gui does  work. So it is only the play button on the remote that doesn't.

Just to be clear, other buttons on the remote -- pause/prev/next all work. It is crazy that you can pick up the remote and pause the stream with one button, but you have to use a different way to unpause it.
 

I'll just throw in my data points -

Roon volume control setting is set to Device Volume.
- Roon apps (Windows 10, Android 11, and iPad OS 15) correctly control and display SHD volume, and volume is shown correctly on SHD
- Volume control in Volumio web interface controls and displays the volume correctly. 
- SHD knob and remote correctly control SHD volume, and changes show up correctly in Roon app


Play button on SHD remote does not work. Other remote buttons work as expected.  This is the only glitch I have. Hopefully this will be resolved soon.

All looking good here, apart from the remote ‘play’ issue as others have reported.  I’m sure it’ll get fixed in an update. 

It was a really nice surprise to discover that MiniDSP SHD is Roon Ready. I have seen it first in the Roon controller and afterwards I have checked this topic for confirmation. Really cool thing I was waiting for a while for this to happen and it finally happened. I would like to congratulate everyone from MiniDsp who was involved in this project. Well done, guys!

Does the volume control in Roon change the DB quantity on the SHD display screen?

Yes, Roon vol control changes the SHD display (and vice versa).

With regard to my SHD Studio enabled as a Roon End Point, volume control on Roon does not function. In Roon with device control enabled, the volume slider is displayed but it doesn't make actual adjustment to volume. However, the mute function in Roon does work. Selecting mute in Roon activates my SHD Studio mute function ("Mute" displays on my SHD Studio).

On my SHD everything is working correctly except the Play/Pause button on SHD remote. It will pause the song that ROON is playing, but when I press it again it resumes whatever Volumio was previously playing and not what ROON was playing. Hope this will get fixed soon. All other buttons on the remote work correctly.
