TOPIC: roon stop support for uncertified devices !

roon stop support for uncertified devices ! 1 month 6 days ago #54986

My reading Roon on the SHD is on I2S-Master Alsa ....
Maybe check if the SHD is up to date: 1.15 firmware 1.29, and volumio version 1.094 .....
Otherwise open a ticket to the MiniDSP technical service

Well, it’s all working ok today. The SHD i2s ALSA is now outputting audio fine. No idea what’s different today other than everything was switched off last night and turned on again. Maybe that’s all it took. But yes, I also get the clicking and popping on higher res tracks as mentioned by others when using this output.

So for now I’m going to try out Roon using a Sonos Port streaming device which is linked into the SHD. All the highest res tracks are converted to 48KHz 16 bit, which is a ‘limitation’ of Sonos (but doubt whether I’d hear a difference).

Minidsp will hopefully fix everything once full Roon certification is granted.

MiniDSP support is pretty good, they might be able to help you get Roon Bridge working.

I lucked out and my SHD was grandfathered in for Roon (units that were bought and activated before the certification requirements went into effect), but I never could figure Bridge out when I was messing around - hence maybe support can help?

Also did a Sonos (Connect in my case) with Roon and it sounded great. Only ran into a problem when I started using a convolution filter in Roon to attempt room correction. This caused clipping because the filter surpassed the 16-bit limit. That’s why I bought the SHD, then dropped the convolution filter for Dirac and retired the Sonos.

I do have Roon Bridge working now (rebooting everything seemed to do the trick). My SHD is fairly recent so I can’t get the full Roon activated. Apart from the clicking problem on the highest res tracks, it’s fine. And as mentioned earlier I’m only going to use Roon with Sonos for now (streaming to SHD) as I’m trialling the software for now. I just wanted to ensure that I could use Roon directly with the minidsp in case I want to subscribe to Roon long term.

Ah, I did that as well until I had time to set up my SHD. Roon to Sonos Connect to SHD (via optical in my case, probably digital coax in yours) and it worked very well.

Edited my prior post, meant to say that MiniDSP support is good (not to say that Roon support isn’t also good!).

Hi, I am glad your miniDS i2S output works. I have both I2S and SPDIF outputs listed within Roon audio, but I have never got SPDIF output to produce any sound, is it normal?

I can’t get output on the spdif either although it all ‘looks’ to be working, but there’s no audio. The i2s is fine though, although the clicking issue with the very high res tracks needs sorting.

Thank you, that' reassuring! the high res noise is annoying.

I too have my brand new SHD Stdio working.

It works with Airplay, but not at the quality desired. (Roon will show the SHD as being accessible via Airplay. Don't use this, unless you're just after background music or don't have anything higher quality than 16/44KHz)

But the trick does appear to be:

- in Volumio as installed, install and enable Roon Bridge. To install, look for the Plugins menu on the left of the Volumio screen, scroll down until you find Roon Bridge, and install it then enable it.

In Roon, look for the SHD. It will be listed as having two capabilities, spdif and I2S Out. I assume that - like a Raspberry Pi 4 - the I2S output- just wires from the processor board - is what's hooked up to the SHD's processing and outputs. Enable the I2S output. Ignore the Roon SPDIF output completely

Now you should be able to select 'shd' as the zone in Roon, and play things.

This is good.

My setup has AES/EBU-fed powered loudspeakers (Kii Threes) and it is kinda tedious to keep trekking from computer to living troom while trying to work out what's happening. Dragging the SHD to the computer, powering it up and hooking up the network with headphones plugged in did the trick. When I heard music via the headphones, took it back re-hooked to speakers and LAN in the living room, unplugged headphones abnd it all played.

Phew.

There’s been a Volumio update today. Installing that, I can now stream hires Roon tracks to the SHD I2S output *without* the faint clicking and popping. And I gather full Roon certification is imminent.

Just updated my SHD with the Volumio update (Settings -> system)
It worked

Look under Settings -> My Music
There's now a 'Roon Ready' switch. hadn't noticed it before, perhaps because I don't have any music that isn't under Roon's control.

Anyway, I turned it on :-) A little green light saying 'Active' is now illuminated.

Dunno what the overall effect is; the Roon app running on the Mac (etc) sees no difference in the SHD, but it all works.
Looks like progress, though

Quick question re Roon usage with SHD. I have the Roon Bridge plug-in working fine with the SHD via the i2S output. The SHD is awaiting full Roon certification. What exactly will be the advantage of using the Roon certified SHD instead of the Roon Bridge setup as now (in practical terms)?

I'm wondering the same thing. I expect some integration between SHD remote and Roon (e.g. play/pause, next/prev etc). An important plus would also be the feature that putting SHD in standby stops current Roon stream.

Ah yes, the SHD remote integration would be very useful.

Volume control (from ROON UI) is another thing, hopefully. Right now it shows as "fixed volume" although it's configured as "device volume".
