There's a Suggestion Box area above that would be appropriate for this.

Changing the "control law" of the volume control should be doable with a software update.
However, I'm not sure of any negative implications for Roon users.

I was fine with the previous versions that had a non-adjustable 100 value, but I am probably in the minority.

Dave.

That's my hope, is that a software update will correct this.

For example, in the SHD configuration (USB one, with the DSP controls) we could have two sliders next to each level meter that set bounds for the web interface volume control.

My biggest concern is "oops I accidentally touched the screen where 100% is, now I've got nearly 10,000 watts of amplifiers running on 240v dumping full output."

If it was just a matter of inconvenience, it wouldn't be too big of a deal, but the way volumio talks to the SHD, it's a liability. That interface needs to be about 500% more customizable, especially on a piece of equipment at this price point.

The fact that only 30% of the volume control actually operates in a usable range is merely irritating. A setting that sets bounds, both high and low, and a toggle for the display between relative and absolute is pretty much mandatory for using these boxes in any serious system, imo.

I'll toss it in the suggestion box, I spose.

I've stuck with using the remote control and so have no issues but I agree the Volumio volume control doesn't work well. I guess the route of the issue is the huge dynamic range of the SHD volume control.

Controlling volume levels with a touch screen is never a good idea. If you want to see a really bad implementation take a look at the Lumin App's tiny slider bar - even the Lumin representative on forums cautions against it's use.

I don't use Volumio because of the UI. Once I finished the set up I never opened it again. I don't like the SHD remote control either, except for changing sources. Instead opted for a passive volume control - I'm not a purist audiophile - from Goldpoint. I leave the SHD at 0 dB. I'm old fashioned :)

Have you got a different way to stream Tidal or Qobuz using your SHD, or do you not use such things? I didn't think I had an obvious alternative for streaming Tidal to Volumio?

Using Bubbleupnp of MConnect app on Android (or something similar on iPhone) you can use the app to login to Qobuz and Tidal and use the app to browse and play music from Qobuz and Tidal.

With Bubbleupnp of MConnect app browsing for music on Qobuz and Tidal is okay but not great. Usually I use the Tidal app to set favorites. Tidal favorites are easily browseable with Bubbleupnp B)

However don't use the adjustable volume option in Bubbleupnp. It gets you to 0dB very quickly

Is all of this actually better than just using Volumio then?

I think I remember reading before that an Android phone would need to be rooted to use Bubbleupnp too, right?

It looks to me that the level scale of Volumio is linear and directly mapped to the log scale (dB) of the volume control of the SHD. Linear scales are never a good idea to control volume given how our perceptual sensation of level works (as is illustrated in this video).

The user interface of Bubbleupnp is much nicer. Tidal integration is better. And no you don't need to root your phone. I haven't.

Well, honestly the issue would still be present if I plugged in a mouse and used that instead, whether I'm touching it with my finger, clicking the ring with a cursor, or even worse, using the scroll wheel, it's the same issue, and the same danger.

"using" the volumio interface at http://shd is really the issue, touch / cursor isn't, plus, the only thing that makes it a bad idea is the fact that it's broken. I have lots of touch interfaces that work, like, the oscilloscope I'm getting ready to upgrade to has one...let's just hope that's not only one accidental touch away from popped breakers, blown fuses, fire, and police calls for noise disturbances.

Just to drive the point home a bit more, here's my oldest son, sitting where he likes to sit sometimes, in the mouth of one of my bass horns. There's 4 of these with B&C 21sw152 woofers, and they're powered by a Crest pro 9200.

Would be a shame if there was a screen showing the shd config and that spot that makes it jump to 100% got touched / clicked accidentally.

I use Lumin App and a Lumin A1. Before that I used a Sonore ultraRendu and Lumin App. There are lots of ways of getting around Volumio, some more costly than others, and all available on the used marketplace. I've also used Audirvana. There is also Airplay if you use an iPad.

My alternatives to Volumio are not without cost but we've all learned that nothing is free. Volumio is "free" if you want to put up with its quirks. Not for me.

I also own a PeachTree DeepBlueSKY all in one box that I use in my woodworking shop. I bought a used Airport Express to avoid Peachtree's MUSZO app which is even worse than Volumio.

Totally agree. The real problem is Volumio...

I forgot about the Android alternative Bubbleupnp. I used that with Tidal for several years before I moved back to an iPad. Excellent piece of software that is very well supported. You don't need to root your phone.
