Subs can be integrated, but only at the output, the SHD plugin can provide crossovers so the subs don't get a full range signal.
LFE isn't actually a sub channel, its for low frequency effects which may be played over mains or subs as appropriate.
But basically SHD isn't well suited to bass management before it as far as I can see.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I value my movie watching just as importantly as my music listening to be honest.
We mostly watch movies but when I'm listening to music I really take the time to enjoy it.

My source for movies is an Nvidia shield where I use the usual movie apps but I also run a Plex server with a ton of .MKV files from it too.

My source for music is an Innuos Zen Mini Mk3 which rips my CDs and acts as a ROON Core with both my cd rips and TIDAL HIFI as a source.

I'm a bit of a detail freak and will only listen to red book so no MP3 etc etc.
Sane with movies, I want to maintain the original signal including the audio.

I use an Arcam SR250 which I'm using as an HDMI switcher and Dolby/DTS decoder. This downmixes everything to 2.1.

I've had the Arcam for a while now and I want to change things.

My intention was to use a pair of Purifi class D monoblocks as poweramps to the SHD which in turn would be fed by a Marantz NR1200 which would do all my hdmi and downmixing using its 2.1 pre outs to feed the SHD.

Thought it would be the perfect solution but losing the LFE is a bit of a deal breaker for me.

Adding a 2 x 4 HD would work I guess but it will muddy the waters a bit.....maybe......I'm not sure?

:(

The only other device I can think of is an Anthem STR Pre amp. This WILL do 2.1 but it's over £3 grand. A big chunk of change......

Measure very well on ASR but still, it's a ton of cash to lay out.

Having got the crossover sorted (including using a time delay on the signal to the main speakers to ensure time and phase alignment), I then run Dirac up to 200 Hz to give the bass response I want.

I plan to do exactly this. How do you time align impulses from the sub and main woofers with REW?

Hi.

It's basically trial and error and a LOT of reading and re-measuring. Please read this thread as it helped me get started.

www.avforums.com/threads/measuring-timin...ns-with-rew.2235931/

I'm no expert and I don't want to lead you down the wrong path but it's all about learning learning learning. I still get it wrong now and it gets very frustrating.

Also, try a YouTube channel called "home theatre gurus". He has a really informative selection of videos including one that is 1.5 hours long and is all about using a mini DSP 2X4HD with REW.

I'm sorry if this seems like a cop out but I genuinely don't have the necessary experience to guide you in the right direction! :(

I hope this helps you on your journey. :)

Ok, thanks a lot for the links. I’m already an intermediate REW user, but I’m unsure about time alignment in the bass. Up to now I have just generated excess phase plots and trialed with crossovers until I can get a uniform minimum phase region in the bass.

I will read on :)

I feel I'm at the beginner/intermediate stage but I am a baby in all this. I have a friend who knows quite a lot but it's hard as he lives miles away so taking advice over the phone whilst trying to take measurements is a bit tricky..

Gotta be honest though, I love taking measurements of my subs and mains even though I don't fully understand it all yet, it's fantastic when something clicks and you figure something out. :)

I hope you find what you're looking for mate.

All the best.

Mike.

That AV Forums thread was really helpful! There was basically a walkthrough for exactly what I need by user Ultrasonic. He stresses to focus on time-aligning the impulses across the crossover region specifically, and accept that there will be some delay in the deeper bass. That is also in line with my experience so far, that we’re actually not that sensitive to group delay in, say, 30-60 Hz., but we’re very sensitive to misalignment/phase issues around the 80-100 Hz crossover region (because the waves blend from two very different sources). Also, he has very nice point about not shortening the IR window to focus on first arrivals of waves, but instead let the room mode pattern establish itself, and try to align those phase issues will be much more satisfactory, since our ears cannot separate room pressure from direct sound in the low bass.

I agree about the thrill of the chase :-) when something clicks and you hear a favorite track with that super-deep, dry, and balanced bass - my god. That’s the magic
