I expect this is a stupid question but I have not seen the answer by searching.

The MiniDSP SHD has both an analog and digital volume control, correct? And they operate in tandem, such that both analog output (preamp basically) and the digital outputs are all volume varied at the same time by the same action (front knob or remote), correct? So what is the unity gain setting volume? I assume that's where I would want to set and leave the volume when utilizing a separate preamp to control my amplifier.

Thanks,
RLW

I'm not sure about the first part of your question but unity gain would be the 0 dB setting. [Update:] Well, that's if you're not using Dirac Live or any other EQ. If you are, then the notion of "unity gain" becomes a bit problematic and you will most likely want the level set lower.
I am not miniDSP support.

There's no analog volume control in the SHD unit.

Ok, that's what I would have guessed also: 0db.

And your point is taken re: Dirac, as certain frequencies can get boosted. But close enough, I just want the MiniDSP to not be attentuating heavily. I want to set it an forget it and only use my separate preamp to adjust volume.

Re: "There's no analog volume control." Oh, so there is unity gain regardless of the volume setting on the analog outputs? Is that your final answer?

Cheers,
Robert

Perhaps a slightly more pragmatic answer that adds value to the stated intent without semantics. Anyway, all I needed to validate was 0db for unity gain, so I'm out.

Robert

I said there's no analog volume control. :) The outputs can indeed be controlled in volume (individually or with the master), but it's done in the digital domain.

With the SHD you no longer need your separate preamp. You can use the SHD for all "preamp" duties.

How's that for lack of pragmatism???

Dave.

(Concerns Studio in particular): How is the volume control operating? I have OpenDRC-DI, where the volume knob reacts very slow and makes it practically unusable (I do not use it as the volume is always 0 dB, but have checked to see how it works...).
Also, the volume being digital, are there any remarks to the possible loss of resolution at low levels?
And one more, for the MiniDSP Team if they are reading, is there any plan for Studio without Dirac? In my case, I am using OpenDRC with Acourate DRC .... but am looking for a digital preamp with volume control.
