Re-flash works; careful of Volumio plug-ins 3 years 9 months ago #43434

The first time I opened Volumio on my SHD via LAN, it worked ok (playing Tidal), at least for the few minutes I had it open. But I tried to install the Parametric EQ plugin, and Volumio immediately became totally unresponsive and I could not connect with the SHD again via LAN. Other inputs continued to work.
I followed the process described in the previous post (from miniDSP support) to re-flash the micro-SD card with the Volumio OS. It worked, at least in the sense that Volumio booted up and I was able to connect via LAN and start playing music. Two caveats, though:
1. Before the re-flash, Volumio offered me an option to enable a Roon Ready option. Now I can't find that option. Roon does recognize and stream to the SHD as a ShareportSync option under Airplay, but I believe Airplay is limited in sample rate. Volumio says it is running the latest version, so I'm wondering whether the Roon Ready setting was disabled (don't know exactly what it did in the first place, as I never got a chance to use it).
2. No idea yet whether Volumio is now stable. It froze after about 10 minutes of streaming from Tidal, requiring a hard restart of the SHD. It has been working for a few minutes, streaming directly through Tidal, as I write this.
Anyway, I obviously don't recommend installing the parametric EQ plugin in Volumio. But the re-flash procedure does work, subject to the caveats above.

Went into the same trap downloading the plugin "Volumio Simple Equalizer 0.4.1".
Afterwards no access anymore to Volumio web-page on my shd.

Following exactly these instructions ... and it's online again. Thank you very much to all of you!

The SHD is one of the most powerful parametric equalization products on the market, but you need to install a primitive EQ plugin into Volumio?????? :)

I wanted to see how the Volumio plug-ins worked, as I was interested in using Volumio with another device that doesn't have its own EQ.

I have yet to use Volumio on my SHD. I did run through its setup and told it where my music share was but then never used it. Fast forward several weeks and I wanted to try it out, but I had done some major reorganizing of my music share so in Volumio I stupidly chose the factory reset option instead of just dropping the share and recreating it (or, I suppose, just reindexing). Anyway, I lost the ability to connect to Volumio.

I followed the steps in the post above to reinstall Volumio on the SD card and can now connect. I've added my share and have a library... And can queue and play music - but no sound output. Something isn't right, although I'm not that familiar with Volumio there doesn't seem to be as many settings in the menus as I recall. Like there is no output device option at all. And the plugins menu has nothing listed as installed and nothing listed as available - and I KNOW there were items there before.

Sound IS output fine with other inputs.

Using the SHD Windows app, connected to the unit there is nothing showing on the input meters when Lan is selected and Volumio is playing.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Robert

The version linked on the previous page is a bit old, so one thing to try would be updating it. Not sure why that would make a difference but it won't make it any worse...

Also, you're sure it's the miniDSP version - it has the minidsp logo at in the top left?

Thanks for your reply. It says System Version 1.038 Released: Tues Sept 24 03:54:27 EST 2019

Thats less than a month old. And, yes, it's branded MiniDSP at the top left corner.

When I click on Check Updates it tells me I'm already on the latest one.

Cheers,
Robert

Yeah, that is the latest version. It doesn't show any plugins available on mine either.
The Volumio version in the SHD is a work in progress.

However, you should be able to play music from your NAS or streamed radio or whatever.

Ok, it's very likely then that I'm confusing seeing plugins available when I dabbled with Volumio on an old x86 machine quite a while ago.

Does yours show some sort of output device anywhere, perhaps on the Playback or System page?

As I said, it seems to be happily playing music but the MiniDSP isn't receiving it.

Cheers,
Robert

No, you won't see an output device in this case. (See attached capture of my screen.)

In a normal Volumio setup on a RaspberryPi (or similar) you would see the "Audio Output" option on the "Playback Options" screen, but not in this case since you only have one option for destination.

Dave.

Thanks. I'll start concentrating on the actual problem and not so much on a faulty memory. I assume at this point that Volumio is just fine. Curiously I recall the visual theme from your screen capture but mine is purple triangles and there are only a couple others, none of which I remember. But I digress again...

I'm searching for more reports of no sound output but coming up short. I have sent a report to the support team but had hoped someone here would have seen the issue. Anyway, I'll report back what I find or what they tell me.

Thanks for the assistance.

Cheers,
Robert

Ok, going to share some breaking news here. Although suspected for some time, I'm officially an idiot. See anything wrong in the picture?

Hi there,

I have a MiniDSP SHD that is 10 days old. It has been working perfectly, connected to my network via an Ethernet cable.

I haven’t changed anything and haven’t even been powering the unit down each day, it is always on, and all of a sudden I can’t find it on the network. I have used the Fing network scanner, and it doesn’t appear there. The other two devices that are plugged into the same network point are working perfectly, I have even switched the cables round to double check but that makes no difference. On the back of the SHD unit, the two lights on the network port are illuminated.

Are there any other things I can do before having to take the SHD apart and completely re-flashing it?! If you’re telling people to do this, there is clearly a design fault, and not something I’d expect on a £1600 unit.

Please advise.

Thank you,
James

Shut everything down from the SHD to the router/switch (including the router/switch), wait a minute or so and switch everything back on from the router/switch to the SHD. If you look through the side window before shutting everything down, look for a flashing green light. Whenever I have had this problem I've noted that the flashing green light is not on. After shutting down and restarting as described, everything works as it should.

Usually, this happens after a glitch on the network which does not seem to affect my Lumin A1 or Airport Express or Apple TV or Peachtree DeepblueSKY. I remember that my Sonore products would occasionally exhibit the same behavior and that was the procedure that they advised. I just carried it forward to the SHD and it as always worked for me. Good luck.
