I'm thinking of upgrading from my DDRC-22D...

I use a pair of nearly full range 3-way monitor speakers along with a pair of stereo subwoofers in my main system.

Can I use the analog outputs of the SHD for the L/R subwoofer channels (time aligned & low-passed 24dB per octave at 60Hz) and the coaxial digital out (time aligned & high passed at 24dB per octave at 60Hz ) into my Esoteric SA-50 DAC for the speakers?

Hi Nick

THanks for your repeat interest in our units. :-)
In answer to your question you indeed surely can.. Both the Analog AND Digital 4 x OUT are always on and the outputs from the DSP.
You will have full flexibility inside the plugin to easily build that 2.2 setup.

Feel free to let us know if any questions.

One more question...

Can the analog input be set up as a HT Bypass input?

I know it's tough with the attenuation required by the EQ, but I'm currently using a Wyred4Sound STP-SE specifically for the HT Bypass function. I don't have any analog sources aside form my Esoteric SA-50 CD/SACD Player/DAC.

If I could get rid of the preamp and just use the SHD into the DAC that would make things a lot easier. Then I could just use the digital volume control in the Esoteric to control volume.

I'm assuming the analog input is digitized and active over the digital ouptuts?

@Nick V

I'm afraid that it doesn't have an HT bypass input as it's not on the user manual.. :-)
Please check out the user manual for more details. It will be a great start to get a better understanding of the unit. If it's not in the manual, its not there. ;-)

Analog in -> ADC - > DSP - > Analog/Digital out.

Thank you,

Even considering it's not a zero gain HT Bypass...

Could I not just send the analog l/r pre-outs from my HT receiver into the l/r analog inputs of the SHD, keep the volume control on the SHD at MAX and then calibrate the HT receiver from there, or would that not work properly?

As my system gets more and more complex, it's tough to continue integrating my hybrid HT/2 Channel system.

Also I can't find much info on the digital volume control used in the SHD (and DDRC-22D). Is it suitable to use the volume control as a digital preamp? I know that some higher end digital preamps and DACs use 64 bit attenuation circuits, which use ultra-high resolution, zero noise, bit perfect mechanisms. What are the details on the digital volume control in the SHD (and DDRC-22D)?

I’m using the analog inputs on mine as an HT bypass in the way you describe. My harmony remote simply raises the minidsp volume up to max and selects the relevant preset, which is configured to just pass through the 2 channels.

The minidsp does add a couple ms of delay which needs to be accounted for in the HT processor. In my case the distance calculated by Audessey for the front 2 speakers increased by about 15ft.

Great to hear! I can't imagine there would be any difference if I was still using the SHD to cross my main 3-way monitors over to my stereo subs (instead of configuring to pass through the 2 channels)? The mains and stereo subs would just end up being a full range front l/r in the HT System.

I have a pair of "music subs" (Rythmik FM-8's) that my 3-way monitors sit directly on top of. Then I also have a pair of larger subwoofers for LFE/summed bass in my HT system. So this way my front mains would still run crossed over to the Rythmiks as full range front l/r in the HT system. Unless I'm missing something?
