Great question.. :-) What's your setup here? A multiway speaker?
I guess that you could indeed piggy back a 2x4HD to the analog out (or digital with an SPDIF to TOSLINK adaptor?) so this way you can get your extra 2ch. I'd recommend that you go for the 2x4HD.

My setup is an Oppo bluray hdmi to a Yamaha reciever > a pair of 3-ways all active; and I want to use 2 channels for sub and centerchannel...so 8 channels all together. Right now my speakers run only 2-way with analog xo, since im not sure what to buy.
I mean to use the Oppo as preamp > minidsps > amp >speakers. Any problems in that? I allready have one 2x4hd.

For such setup, I think that it would be much easier to grab something like a 10x10HD or if you want Dirac Live, the DDRC-88A + BM feature. That unit will do tuning of your overall system under one software. That's much better I think than SHD + 2x4HD.

I agree, concerning the 88a, but I just not that keen on a piece of equipment that has 5 years (?)or more since launched...when im going to base my entire setup on this

Can the shd only put out on one set of outputs, I think the manual says choose either rca or xlr? If piggybagging a 2x4 on the shd, I would like to use the to xlr-outs to tweeter and mid, while using rca out > external 2x4, if possible?

This thing is something I've been waiting for since Christ went in shorts, as we say in Sweden. But what really saddens me is that it only has four channels. In my setup I have a pair of open baffel mids/tweeters concisting of three 0,5 meter ribbons and eight 8" drivers witch is very tricky to make passive filters to, then a pair of 6x12" open baffel servo subwoofers.
I'd LOOOVE to own a box like this if it only had more channels. Make a two units high with six or eight channels and you will surely get a lot of customers for it. It would be The Standard box we all look for.

I agree. This produkt dosnt really fit, No rutined speakerbuilder can use this produkt alone, since they usually go multiway, and the new speakerbuilder would build a two way passive xo,I think.

We don't especially agree the generic statement you're making that "no speaker builder can use the SHD".We never claimed that SHD was the DO IT ALL for everybody box... :-) Surely enough, when we add 4 ch extra, the cost is going to go higher and some people just may not want to spend that money..

As for your question, it's very simple to understand looking at the user manual. The SHD is a 2x4 structure. i.e. all 4 x out are replicated on all outputs. Digital (SPDIF), XLR, RCA. All 4 x signals are the same. Just different format. In other words, your plan of doing SHD for mid + high (i.e. 4 x analog for stereo) won't work as you'd need a 2x6 or 2x8 structure. Not a 2x4.

You forgot "the routined speakerbuilder"...newbies usually start on a twoway, usually passive xo. Routined usually goes higher way, but the shd cannot do multiway as-is. A shd is kind of exotic/expensive, so I just think it needs the possibly to do more than 2 way.
But as I understand it, I kan do my two way via xlr out, and use the rca-out to drive a 2x4hd, for the stereo subs?

As an experienced speaker builder, I will keep the mid/high filtering passive. For protection against blowing up the tweeter (e.g. human error) you need at least a cap in series with the tweeter anyway. But we all have our preferences, miniDSP cannot make all of us happy with a single product.

In that setup you will have to leave the mid without HP filter, so 2.5way filtering. If you want true 3way, split the input, mid-high to the SHD, bass to e.g. a 2x4HD

Yes, I´m aiming for the 2,5 way as you describe. I will change the enclosure for the mids from vented to closed. That will make the -3db around 70 hz, where l´ll LP the subs in.
I was planing on the capasitor in line with the tweeter, how big?
