Hi everyone, devteam.

I'm just starting to wire the miniSharc and Curryman DAC's and would like to check the pin numbering/layout for the I2S I/O expansion port, please. The datasheet covers the pin designation. However, the pin numbering/layout on the board is not marked ... I've included a pdf of what I think is the correct pin layout.

Regards,
Paul

It's not that clear is it, it is covered a couple of times in threads here though, Pin 1 is correct, the pin next to it is pin 2, the one above pin 3, next to that pin 4..........

8 7
6 5
4 3
2 1

and so on.

Some folk here are working on a little board adapter that has better connections maybe with uLF connectors and gnd connection next to each data/clock connector. maybe even active clock distribution. MiniDSP have a habit of then bringing these customer development to market so hopefully we'll all get to share.

Thanks for the quick reply Stefan.

So the pin layout is done for ribbon-cable... corrected pdf.

I'm using aright-angled 2x15 header with ribbon-cable connecter to make wiring much easier. Add-on board does sound good :)

Paul

Spot on!!

You're probably going to find you need to get the gnd lines closer to the clock lines than a ribbon will allow. I found that doing a twisted bunch of cables with a gnd line tightly twisted up with the others gave me a small enough loop that my lock was solid even over nearly 20CM. Not ideal but without a gnd line per connection and coax cables, proper termination etc, it's not getting any better!!

 Spent the last two days trying to get this little lot to work... miniStreamer > digi-fp > miniSharc > 2x Curryman DAC's ... had nothing but static on the outputs at full volume and all quite below that. It has been a tiring two days of testing voltages, connections & tweaking the wiring between the miniSharc & DAC's. Gave up last night at roughly 02:30

:( First thing this morning thought I'd triple check the pin-out against my reference notes... and then check my reference notes against the datasheet for the miniSharc... Errr... I'd managed to swap LRCK & BCLK pins around in my ref. notes

B) Happy to report a fully working set-up and all sounds very good so far

Paul,

glad to hear that you finally got things working and that you enjoy the sound :) Maybe it's time to add some more details in the manual. Just realized that quite a few seem to have ordered this combination (miniSHARC + curryman DAC)

looking forward to see your setup :woohoo:

kind regards, Daniel

Thanks both... First listen this morning was to make sure everything worked as it should, and it does. Still a few weeks away from getting this into an enclosure, but will have it in a usable state this weekend for some longer listening. surprising how much detailing is apparent with smaller speakers when the LF is removed... DAC's are from the new batch after the QC issue with DC offset ... both measure <7mA on all outputs :)

Full Set-Up:
Digital Front End...
Foobar 2K > miniStreamer > Digi-FP > miniSharc [48KHz plug-in] > 2x Curryman DAC's
Amps...
Duel Mono 'The Wire' Low Power Ultra High Performance amp for mid & high frequency. Low Power Desktop Amp [based on LPUHP amp] for LF.
Speakers...
Frugel Horn 3 with Mark Audio Alpair 7.3 full range units. Pair of helper woofers fitted with P835026 Peerless 8" HDS units.
PSU...
3 x 'The Wire' PSU v1 ... one unit set to +/-15Vdc, two units set to +5Vdc.

Included some photo's from earlier in the project...

Daniel, your DAC's are well designed and a nice price to boot ... only natural to order them along with the miniSharc :)

Regards, Paul

Very nice!

Looks like the board has 4 isolated outputs, each with MCLK, LRCK, BCLK & SD? Plus, requires a 3.3V [?] supply for the isolated side?

Brilliant little board that. Do you mind me asking why you didn't make it stack directly on top of the minisharc? Also how do you get to the input pins? Is one of the headers for that?

With such arrangement it is easier to connect DACs and less noise on the interface.
