Pete, thanks for posting your updates. Do you think it's possible to connect four "ebay DACs" to one SHARC, to use all eight channels? Or is that too many connections on the MCLK / BCK pins?

I'm hoping it will...I'm going to test running all 3 dac's sometime tonight..I'll probably be ordering a fourth one as well.

I don't really have any experience with i2s signal's and clocks, maybe the dev team or curryman can chime in with clock splitting and any best practices?

The other day someone was talking about using an external clock for a daisy chain to prevent the signal getting too weak from multiple connections. The juice coming through these I2S lines is extremely light.

Yeah , it may seem that some type of clock spliter circuit is needed...

I've got any combination of 2 dacs working fine...so i know all my dacs are good..however when i stack in the 3rd dac...the sound breaks up and eventually craps outs :(

My wires are about 2 inches long going from the sharc to the first dac...and then the signals propogate to the other dacs through the stacking headers...

Dev team, curryman, anyone :) Help!!

I'm sure curryman will have a solution but it probably involves a custom PCB and a fine tip soldering iron. But that might work for you!

Damn! Soldering is definately not my baby! I think i damaged my minisharc's BCLK pin out while I was de-soldering the cable to try shorter thinner ones! The little metal ring that lines the hole came out and took some of the trace with it!

Trying to fix it now...but it's not looking good :(

Good news!...I was able to repair the sharc...hopefully the connection I made holds out..

Bad news!...seems there is no way to get 3 dacs running off the clocks by just splitting them...some type of active splitter is needed :(

2 dacs work just fine, but I need minumum 3 for my 2way + sub config

Thank you very much for sharing your progress! I didn't have the time to go on setting up my DACs with the miniSHARC the last few days but according to your findings we indeed probably need some active buffering of the signals. So i'll try to speed up the development of a suitable fanout buffer board ;)

Success!! So, not wanting to be defeated :) I thought to try i few more ideas in my head...

I was powering the dacs and the sharc by seperate wall warts....the dac's were getting 8.25VDC (within spec) and the sharc was getting 12VDC (again within spec)...I was wondering maybe the power was providing noise and maybe if I powered both by the same supply it would help in this regard...so i hooked them up to them same 12v supply ...and that was it, working now! Still seems i little sensitive to touch and movement though...but when i finalize my install in an aluminum enclosure I'm hoping I can clean it all up...

I was wondering something else...if you look at the dac pic on the first page, they each have a gnd pin next to the clock pins....i currently don't have this hooked up anywhere....should I connect it to one of the sharc gnd pins ...like pin 23 on the sharc header?

good news!

yes, you should connect all gnd pins and use a flat ribbon cable always with signal - gnd - signal - gnd - ... At the minisharc side you should wire all gnd pins to pins 5-8 of connector J2.

Looking forward to hear about your progress and maybe see some pictures ? ;-)

Thx curryman, I guess more soldering is in order!

I got some pictures, but I can't remember how to post them....I'll have to try a few different methods...

Time to get some positive Karma :cheer:

Attaching pictures is quite easy (just upload/add file below the editor area), but I had to use internet explorer. With firefox, which I normally use, it didn't work for me

More good news!

I've been running the sabresharc dsp dac in my car for the last few days...it is working great, and sounds awesome too! No noise(hiss/ground loop etc), very quiet and clean! Only thing is a startup thump, so I just ordered a DEI 528T auto timer to add a 4sec delay to my amp power on.

I have it setup up in a temporary enclosure for testing as follows:

Source: Toshiba Excite 7.7 Android Tablet via Toshiba MultiDock with HDMI out

HDMI -> ViewHD HDMI to Toslink Spdif Converter -> Digi-FP Toslink -> minisharc -> 3x Sabre 9023 DACS -> 2xJL-Audio CL-RLC remote controllable line drivers (for bass and treble knob control) -> Alpine PDX-V9 5CH amp -> Scanspeak Illuminator 18WU/4741T00 Mids/Scanspeak Illuminator D2004/6020-00 Tweeters and Image Dynamics IDQ12V3 sub.

I am using the Vol-FP as a knob to control master volume...works great! I was able to extend the distance by using a 6ft ethernet patch cable...

I'll post some pictures of my temporary enclosure and setup tomorrow hopefully..

In the mean time, here are a couple of pics of just the dac and minidsp stuff...
