I found these i2s input sabre es9023 DAC's on ebay, DAC-24192-ULN ...so I ordered 3 of them ($150 shipped)

www.ebay.ca/itm/330886206404?...#ht_627wt_1397

and bought a minisharc , DIGI-FP and VOL-FP

Just wondering how to marry them all... how to best interconnect them...here's a pic of their layouts...

Any help would be much appreciated!

So would it be safe to assume that pins 16,17 and 18 would go to each dacs respective 'data' line.

Pin 9, MCLKIN , would be split into each dacs MCLK

Pin 14, I2S_IN_LRCK, would be split into each dacs LRCK

and Pin 15, I2S_IN_BCLK, would be split into each dacs BCK

Using regular wires soldered into the dacs would work OK?

Wow! This is exactly what I am looking for. An I2S DAC with unbalanced output in the price range < $100 (although the ES9023 DAC Chip alone only costs $5... :-) )

Do you think it is any good? It's difficult to evaluate the output stage and how well designed it is. I wonder how important a stable power supply is for this DAC?

Haven't got it yet, ...seems to be quite new, like a month old...couldn't find any feedback on it on any forums...

I will definitely update this thread with my experience's with it...

Audio format is I2S mode (MSB sampled on second rising edge of BCLK) from the MiniSHARC and this mode is supported by the ES9023 if the DIF pin (pin 4) is set low. I dont know if DIF is set low on DAC-24192-ULN or if there is a jumper (or other) config for this available.

Pin connections you suggested should work, I guess.

ES9023 supports both synchronous and asynchronous mode (MCLK>192*fs => MCLK=24.576MHz>9.2MHz for 48kHz => OK). I am afraid that I don't know how sync/async mode works with the MiniSHARC.

Looking forward too see how things will work for you with these I2S DACs. Good luck.

Yeah, I'm not to sure how it's going to work out...I'm thinking maybe I should of ordered just one DAC just in case...hoping I just wire them together and it all works :) ...I'll keep you posted

Looking forward to seeing this one built up. I need balanced so no good for me unfortunately but interesting none the less.

You might have trouble with the routing of the clock signals but we will see. You might have to get some sort of active clock splitter.

Damn! Forgot how to embed pictures from google+ again!

Anyway, just an update....First I tested one dac hooked up to the sharc...success! Sounded nice and clean...PC toslink - Digi-fp - minisharc - ebay dac - headphones. Both devices powered by wall warts.

Phew! $400 experiment!

Then I de-soldered the existing header pins off of the dacs to solder stacking headers on them..not as easy as I thought, damaged one dac, but was able to repair it.

Tested 2 dac's stacked and had some issues....loose connectors on pins and the common ground pin on the dacs didn't like to be interconnected. So, after fidling for a couple of hours I was able to them to both work! and stable. In my final install I'll probably shorten all the clock wires to about a couple inches and solder them directly to the pins.

I think I shall call it "SabreSharc DSP DAC" TM :)

I don't have any good equipement to test the performance/sound quality, I should have a better idea when it all gets integrated into my car, hopefully in the next few days....

To curryman, I too am following your progress on your dac both here and on diyaudio, looking real good and probably alot better than these ebay dacs, and hopefully easier to integrate to the minisharc....do you plan to sell these assembled , or just schematic and BOM?
