Hello, with the release of the shark I am looking to upgrade from my NanoDSP 4x8.
My current system is Toslink -> NanoDSP -> 4 x SPDIF custom DAC's -> 2 x 5ch amps for active 4 way system

What do I need to buy to directly replace the NanoDSP with the shark and retain my SPDIF dac's?

Also, would it be possible to "stack" two sharks via I2S to double the available filters? And would the secondary shark be able to have the 8 channels of I2S directly input without the matrix (I.e ch1-8 in -> ch1-8 out)?

You'll need I2S to SPDIF converters, e.g. based on WM8804. There is one available from Twistedpear Audio and probably others.
Stacking of several miniSHARCS is currently not possible due to several reasons:
  • With the current Firmware miniSHARC is configured as I2S Master (only one master is allowed)
  • The actual plugin is 4x10, thus it is not possible to have 8 inputs

What you can probably do however is using one miniSHARC for left and another for right channels, both feed from SPDIF (have a look here).

Hope this helps :)

That does shed some light on it, thank you :-)

(Gotta figure out why I didn't get a notification that someone had replied to the thread...)

I think I will look into the possibility of bypassing the SPDIF input on my dac's and running I2S directly to the AKM dac chip.

Maybe look into it over the weekend and post up my findings here at some point.

What about using a SHARC upstream from the nanoDIGI 2x8? The SHARC would operate on the 2x2 plug-in, because the 2x8 board only allows two inputs. You could add FIR filters to the left and right channels overall, but not separately to each of the 8 output channels.

That is most likely the plan until I can sort out the I2C routing...

I'm dividing stereo into 4 way at the NanoDSP anyway, so changes made to the overall max at the Shark would end up in the correct driver anyway :-)

Would be sweet if they just made a 4 x SPDIF output module for the shark though

I should have said, use the OpenDRC ahead of the nanoDIGI. Maybe someone can clarify this--can you use the SHARC board with the 2x2 plugin from the OpenDRC? It seems to be the exact same board.

miniSHARC is indeed exactly the same board as used in openDRC and the 2x2 plugin works perfectly ;)
That's how I actually use miniSHARC (openDRC) + miniDSP 2x8 (see here).

Best regards, Daniel

Thank you TJ and Curryman, that should help out with the upgrade.

I am still sorting out revision 3 of my shunt power supply for the 4 AKM4396 DAC's then I should be ready to add the SHARC with 2x2 plug in and start looking into an enclosure for this monster LoL.

@ Curryman, I like your enclosure... very professional looking ;)

I think for mine I'm going to go lexan and put the guts on display B)
