:P

I have suggested a couple of times that it "should" be possible to buy an OpenDRC-DA8 and add an AN-FP to it to get analog input. I've done a quick test to see if it works. It does. Electrically, it's very simple, the photos below show the wiring. Mechanically, it might be harder to work out, I'm not sure but the miniSHARC board may need to be moved a bit. Or it may be easier to put the AN-FP on the back and move the current I/O board around to the side.

I believe dreite has done something similar before but this shows directly connecting into an off the shelf OpenDRC-DA8.

More clearly showing wiring (cable to rear panel disconnected):

Proof! Both inputs work

Great setup John! Thanks for sharing. Now go on to find that big drill to make some nice holes on the side of the box.. :-)

Thanks again for sharing to the community!

One solution would be moving the MiniSharc board to the side, unsoldering the two input jacks of the AN-FP, and mounting panel connectors on the rear of the unit via a short cable run...

Excellent... many thanks !

Do you think the DIGI-FP card would also work like this with the DA-8 ? (in place of the AN-FP as you have shown it)

I may need an AES input on the DA-8.
Right now I'm running AES into a Open DRC-DI, that sends SPDIF coax to the DA-8.
Are there any clock issues with what I've been doing? ( I'm clueless about clock so far)

Hey, sorry to post to a post...but I just tried the DIGI-FP card with the DA-8 and it works !
The 4x8 plug-in didn't even ask to sync when I added the board in.

I robbed the DA-8's USB line that goes to the DA-8 VOL-FP card, to power the DIGI-FP card.
Anybody know a good way to connect USB power to all three cards.....?

Hmm - I think you can't run all three cards at the same time, as the plugin only handles a pair of spdif inputs and a pair of I2S inputs...

Hi, i'm missing how input configutations keep from getting the VOP-FP card powered back up ??

The SPDIF input on the back goes to the SPDIF input on the miniSHARC board, the DIGI-FP goes to the I2S input.

You're sure the DIGI-FP is powered via the 5-pin USB? I assumed that it was the 14-pin connector but I haven't tried it.

Anyway, if so, I suppose a little custom cabling would be needed.

Here's how I did mine. It works good. I just removed the back plate and drilled a new one for the connections. Most of the extra gear is power related to work in my car at 12VDC and to turn on remote amps. The only thing missing in the picture is a shielded cable I added and a USB header connection.

The miniSHARC and the DAC will fit on either side in the case. You have to drill 2 new holes each for both. The AN fits nicely in between. New holes have to be drilled for that too. You just have to desolder the XLR connectors to get it to fit. I ran new wires to from them to RCA inputs located on the back.. I2s can be picky over even slight distances. To overcome this I used a shielded ribbon cable to connect i2s from the miniSHARC to the DAC8 but this is not pictured. To shield the cable I simply wrapped it in aluminum foil and then wrapped that in electrical tape to prevent shorting.

Here's a thread documenting some of the process.

You're right, the 14 pin provides power. Re-read the user manual and see the 5-pin USB is only for the rear mount external connection.

Hello
be carefull..
If we use now the OUT on AN-FP (or DIGI-FP ), we can't use OUT on rear panel from DA8 because same "I2S DATA OUT 1&2" on the MiniSharc......
Am i right please ?
Thanks

Hi, I didn't check it but I assume it's just the same signal (bar level differences)

I am not so familiar with DRC series/ minisharc, so I like to ask if it will be possible to add an AN-FP to an OpenDRC-DA? Then for control the miniSHARC 4x8 plugin.
I should get two additional balanced outputs (2 of the original DRC-DA + 2 of the AN-FP)?
What about the inputs on the AN-FP, can I also use them (3 digital + 2 balanced inputs)?

Will this mod be plug and play?

No, that won't work. The openDRC-DA uses the DA-FP IO card, and that uses the exact same inputs and outputs as the AN-FP.

You can use an AN-FP and use the SPDIF input on the MiniSHARC. You'll then need to use something like a twisted Pear Mux/Demux with a separate control switch to select digital inputs. To switch between analog and digital i puts, you create separate configs where you select either SPDIF or I2S inputs on the routing tab.

If you need extra outputs in addition to the set on the AN-FP, you can add more I2S dacs to the MiniSHARC, or use a MiniDAC8 card.
