Does a converter for spdif (optical or coaxial) to HDMI exist? The only thing that I've come across is HDMI to spdif/DVI or spdif/component video.

There's this one -

www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=101&cp_id...=5369&seq=1&format=2

Not sure how well it works... or what happens if you don't connect a video input.

Thanks for the suggestions.. Now that I think about it, it may not work for my situation. I'll be feeding the converter an audio signal only, and HDMI needs both audio and video to work.

Scaler like Dvdo Edge...

I use one to feed my NanoAVR DL with my cd player : it works perfectly fine

The NanoAvr doesn't need video to work normally (I asked to Minidsp before buying it)

I don't understand...

I have a cd player connected on coaxial, another on optical, a bluray player connected on hdmi to a Dvdo Edge, one output to my screen, the second hdmi output connected to the NanoAvr DL, the NanoAVR output to my preamplifier...

I have a similar problem to the OP. I want to get the audio signal from the optical output of my CD player into my nanoAVR. I have found various devices similar to those available from monoprice.com referred to above. However, I am not sure that any of these will work. I may be wrong but it appears that these devices require the presence of a video signal via the input of a component, vga, etc. signal.

Obviously, the CD player only outputs audio. Is there a solution? Do any of these devices also generate the required video signal onto which the audio is embedded? I appreciate that the VGA Edge may be able to this but this does not seem to be available now and is in any event too expensive.

Ask directly to MiniDsp if the NanoAvr need video output.

They told me the NanoAvr didn't need video signal to work when I asked last year.

But I didn't test it

Thanks for the reply. However, it is my understanding that audio is carried on the video signal over the HDMI connections, which is why all of the converters seem to have a video input, be that component, DVI, VGA, etc. I believe that no picture as such needs to be transmitted as the audio can be transmitted with a blank/black screen but something externally to or internally within the converter needs to do this.

I will ask miniDSP about this and hope I am wrong.

You may be interested in this device ‘AU-11HB Audio only HDMI bridge

Despite the potentially misleading name “This clever device also adds a 'blue-screen' video feed into the HDMI signal path so that any HDMI AV receiver or display will accept the audio signal for sound reproduction.”

Thanks for this information. It seems to be just what I needed. I say needed because I bit the bullet and bought an Oppo 203 over the weekend. An expensive solution to my problem but I got a superb Blu Ray Player, SACD player and CD player for "free." I can also get the sound from my TV into the nanoAVR by way of the Oppo ARC Output/Input.

I might have another use for the Audio HDMI Bridge but I would need the price to come down as it's very expensive. Who would have thought that you needed to use the term "Audio only HDMI Bridge" to come up with the correct device? Nevertheless this still seems to be the only stand alone device out there that can get audio into HDMI format without providing an accompanying video signal. Thanks again for the information.
