Thanks, I've already got both REW and the miniDSP DC loaded and running, have taken a dozen or so measurements of individual speaker channels and am diving into the first of the videos linked earlier.  This is an older Mini, running Catalina, and one of the quirks is that the multi-channel MIDI doesn't properly map the Atmos channel configuration - perhaps that's still the case with Ventura and upcoming Sonoma? But since this will not be the primary audio processor swapping out the individual speaker channels was fairly easy, barely an inconvenience.

Currently playing with the alignment and delays portion. Just munched down some leftover pasta with mushroom bacon sauce, and may need a bag of chips and a Corona by the end of the afternoon.
Already used REW to calculate a pair of PEQ filters for each of the subs, but will likely revisit that after watching these vids.

Thanks again for your continued support.

It is very common for the channels in REW to not match the channel mapping in the Mac Midi. REW allows for reassignment of the channels to match your mac

Also, I don't know why you are going on about Atmos considering REW only supports up to 7 channels (5.1 plus surround backs). no atmos support!

I thought I'd made it clear that the REW/miniDSP combo was intended only for fine tuning bass management - i.e. independent PEQ and delay on the two woofers which is beyond the capabilities of the Onkyo's AccuEQ - it has two LFE line outputs, but they're in parallel.
Had I the luxury of timing and budget, I'd have selected either an RZ70 or Marantz Cinema 50, both of which I understand offer such control over sub outs.
A bit of a funny story about the Atmos actually - I'd for several years been experiencing audio dropouts with my old Vizio TV (D65u) which I'd incorrectly attributed to the previous Onkyo receiver ( NR818), and stumbled across a deal on "open box" RZ740.
As it turned out the ARC/CEC handshake between the old TV and new receiver was still shaky, so i got permission to look for a new TV, and and quite pleased with the LG 77" OLED, and as the new receiver was Atmos ready, it was a fairly minor expenditure to add one more pair of in ceiling speakers.  While binge watching The Expanse, when the Rocinante cruises by overhead, the shenanigans of the  embarrassingly enjoyable GOTG3, Dungeons and Dragons flick or Chimp Empire on this new rig, it was well worth every penny.

Now, if only I could dial the subs in a bit tighter; yeah, I know,  first world problems

FYI - in respect to your statement “I thought I made it clear …………independent PEQ and delay on the two woofers which is beyond the capabilities of the Onkyo's AccuEQ” you can always go down the road of “MSO” (see option C: www.minidsp.com/applications/subwoofer-t...tuning-multiple-subs). Quite the learning curve but gives excellent results

Thanks again, a much longer reply to your last may have been lost in the ether. In short, I’ve seen reference to the MSO programme, but it’s my understanding that it works only in Windows, which for me is a non starter.

Been on radio silence for a bit, but have pretty much got things working satisfactorily enough for my use case, and am just wondering about your own situation?

One of the minor foibles of the combination of gear in this system is that the Mac’s MIDI will only map multiple channels for REW measurements when connected directly the the AVR, but doesn’t display the VU meters in the miniDSP’s DC panel - for that, the Mac has to connected directly to the LG TV, but then REW only maps 2 channels. I was concerned I’d have to upgrade the computer until discovering this silliness; all I need to do is swap the HDMI out of the Mac between the TV and the AVR when toggling between making measurements and fine tuning the subs, and receiver’s EQ on mains. Not as convenient as I’d like for real time on the fly work, but if it wasn’t work, it would be fun.
Away on holidays for another couple of weeks, and will likely futz around a bit more upon return - I mean since it’s not broke, I may as well try to fix it further, right? 🫣

Funny you should ask. Just today (decided to take advantage of ‘Prime Day’) I ordered a (i) HDMI audio extractor a.co/d/9540RX6 and (ii) SMSL DAC a.co/d/1vYsKiHSee the attached signal path (Note: as previously mentioned, I am awaiting receipt of certain products and will report back once I have given this forthcoming setup a drive around the block)

oh, and I definitely agree you should work on your setup until you actually do break it  and have to start all over (hahahaha)…..I have done that many times in the past myself!

I’ve had well over 50yrs of chasing the brass ring, breaking / tweaking and upgrading my music only and HT systems, and there’s still fun to be had surfing the trailing edge of the wave of latest and greatest technologies.
Stopped counting the number of individual components I’ve traded through - particularly during an on and off again decade and half in the retail audio trade from early ‘70s to ‘91- , nor the physical media formats I’ve seen come and go.
Hair shirt audiophile purists be damned, I don’t think a wider range of product offerings in terms of both functionality or value have ever been this widely available, thanks in great part to affordable DSP and the evolution that’s taken place in classD amplification. For me the most important thing is understanding your application/use case - and to make automotive analogy - just how much cargo capacity and horsepower you actually need.

Agreed. DSP has had a tremendously favorable impact on my setup. As a matter of fact, I went ahead and upgraded my 2X4 HD to the DDRC-24 version (i.e. Dirac version) and have been duly (to put it mildly) impressed. Quick note, after my last post it dawned on me that it is impossible to bypass the DAC in the minidsp DDRC-24 thus negating any benefit the SMSL DAC I purchased may provide (therefore I have omitted it from the chain)

In my short, I am very happy with the result but alas I am stopping! Next stop is to incorporate Multisub optimizer (MSO)!
