Hi

I am planning to build a 3 way stereo + sub setup using 2 minidsp. I am trying to figure out if I should just start with a complete analogue setup or digital using a minidigi.

I have attached pictures of the two setups i have in mind. They are not complete because I am not sure
how to control the volume in my current setup when using the minidigi.

My questions to the setup is:
- How to control volume when using digital signals and minidigi?
- Is there a smart way to control the volume after the minidsp so that the minidsp has full signal all the time?
- can the minidsp be used with the miniamp without the minidigi?
- does the complete analogue system has any advantages over a system with the minidigi?
- Is there a smarter third alternative given the same sources and 3 way stereo + sub setup?

Thanks in advance.

Regards Brian.

Hello,

Maybe before going too much into the details, let's clarify what the volume does. It's a master volume control being applied on the Digital Signal Processing path of the miniDSP. It's not an analog volume control.
In other words, miniDIGI + miniDSP or miniDSP standalone, it doesn't matter. The volume control as shown on the user manual still applies .

Please have a look at the user manual for the miniDSP. It clearly describes how to connect a master volume control for 2 miniDSP.

See answers to your questions below:

- How to control volume when using digital signals and minidigi?
ANS: Already answered above

- Is there a smart way to control the volume after the minidsp so that the minidsp has full signal all the time?
ANS: Not really but it all depends of gain structure. As long as range of volume control is limited, I doubt that you'll be able to hear a major difference.

- can the minidsp be used with the miniamp without the minidigi?
ANS: Yes. Please read the miniDSP product concept page.

- does the complete analogue system has any advantages over a system with the minidigi?
ANS: Not that I can think off apart from the fact that it saves u the cost of a miniDIGi.. :-)

- Is there a smarter third alternative given the same sources and 3 way stereo + sub setup?
ANS: Don't think so.. i think that your system is about as simple as it could be.

Hope this info helps

Hi,

Just to confirm that i understood:

Use you a binary operation inside the dsp to put on the volume?

If that's it, how convert you the analogical tension of the potentiometre in a binary number?

Is this convertion linear from 0 to 3,3 volts?

Thank you and bravo for your innovations.

Hi

Yes, it is a digital multiplication of the signal with a value between 0 and 1 to reduce the volume.
The DSP chip as an 8 bit analog to digital converter to convert the pot voltage to digital.
The conversion is linear but your pot may be log or linear.

In your picture you have a digital source switch, the minidigi has this function with 4 inputs.
The minidsp analog inputs can still be used with another switch to select minidigi or analog input to the DSP. So your reciever is not needed for source selection.
