OK I need a suggestion. I have a 5.1 system: the AVR powers center and surrounds. An external amp powers the fronts left and right. Bass management is realized in the AVR and I can PEQ manually the channels in the receiver. I would like to have Dirac for stereo (without the sub) music and to EQ the 2.1 part of my system with movies. I use REW to set filters into the AVR for EQuing center and surrounds. In the receiver I can set speakers to large or small and I can set sub channel to MAX which copy the signal from the sub channel to the fronts if needed.
Is it possible to bass managed and EQ the fronts and the sub with a minidsp product including Dirac and bass managed center and surrounds with the receiver? (ouch!)

Do you still have the nanoAVR DL?

Hi John,
no I don't. Rumors began about a Dirac 2.0 and I guess that nanoAvr-DL would not be upgradable (my bad if I will be proof to be wrong guessing) Since then, I did a lot of DIY work to treat my room with some good results, maybe not the top but better than it was. Also funds are not infinite. Of course I could sell all and buy one package like NAD but I won't for WAF reasons. Make a long story short, I have Rotel RSX-1592 AVR and an external amp for 2 speakers. I thought that maybe it could worth it to place Dirac after bass management even if it is only for 2.1 part of the system. I can not aford an external amp for5 or 7 channels.

I think you could use a DDRC-24 between the AVR and power amp. If you set the AVR to MAX and connect the sub to a DDRC-24 output then I think that would do what you want. You might want to draw it out to confirm for yourself. Also it does depend on what exactly MAX does, whether it copies the sub signal after bass management or only the LFE.

Hi John,
per OM Rotel: "SUBWOOFER (yes/no/max): The YES setting is the standard setting if
your system has a subwoofer. If your system does not have a subwoofer,
select NO. Select the MAX setting for maximum bass output with normal
bass being duplicated by both the subwoofer and any LARGE speakers
in the system
." "The OFF setting sends a full-range signal to your subwoofer so that you
can use its built-in low-pass filter. With the OFF setting, a 100Hz highpass
filter is activated for all SMALL speakers in the system.
"
And also:
"When a speaker is set to LARGE on the SPEAKER SETUP menu or
on this menu, the crossover setting is not available since, by definition,
a LARGE speaker plays full-range with no bass redirection to the
subwoofer and no crossover.
"
And finally:
"LARGE front speakers, SMALL center and surround speakers,
and a subwoofer: The normal bass from the SMALL center and
surround speakers is redirected to the LARGE front speakers and the
subwoofer. The LARGE front speakers play their own normal bass
plus the redirected bass from the SMALL speakers and LFE bass. The
subwoofer plays the LFE bass plus the redirected bass from all of the
other channels. This might be an appropriate configuration with a pair
of very capable front speakers driven by a large power amplifier. A
potential disadvantage with mixed LARGE and SMALL configurations
is that the bass response may not be as consistent from channel to
channel as it might be with the all SMALL configuration
"

So, If I understand the manuel, set the fronts to large and set crossover for the sub to off would not be the option because I would lose the bass managed signal from the satellites. I should choose MAX with LARGE fronts so all the bass including from the satellites would go too minidsp DDRC-24 where bass management would be done for the fronts and the sub and Dirac EQ?

Sorry, I'm not really making head or tail of that... :( And it doesn't seem to be unusualy for HT equipment to not do what it's supposed to or says it does. I think the only way to know would be to measure it i.e. send a sweep into each channel and measure the output from the front left and right. (Electrically I mean). That will tell you whether all the bass is going to the fronts.

Thank you for your help. I don't have the knowledge nor the tools to measure electrically the output. So fingers cross and hoping thatt maybe a new product or a second generation of nanoAvr-DL could do bass mangement and dirac via hdmi or ...more funds ! ;)

Heh, not really that much help. An updated DL would be nice; then again, you can put a nanoAVR HD in cascade to do BM, I've been running my system that way for a couple of years now I guess. OTOH the lure of Atmos is getting stronger....

I will stick with 5.1 system. There is a moment where it is impossible to follow the steam or it doesn't worth it to follow the stream. 11 speakers or more to watch a movie...why not 200! But I degress...

Oups? What cascade? BD player to nanoAVR-HD to nanoAVR-DL to AVR?

Humm? Where do you do Bass management?- I was on the impression that it is better to have BM first and Dirac after in order to EQ the speakers not the source??
