Voltage concerns (I.e. clipping) MiniDSP 2X4 HD 4 months 1 day ago #65529

See my following question (in regards to time stamp ~9:03) I posted in the linked video (but as of yet have not received an answer): “I increased the volume to 0db, as you did, in respect to the master volume feature; I have been wondering though……..given the voltage limitations inherent to the MiniDSP HD will doing so increase the chance of ‘clipping’? I wonder if the default setting was intentionally set by the manufacturer to prevent such?”

Anyone have thoughts on the matter?

There's always a risk of clipping if you have sufficient input voltage and/or boost equalization and/or volume control setting that (added together) will exceed the gain structure of the device.

It's your responsibility as the end-user to evaluate and understand the overall voltage gain in your system and where you might incur clipping.

Much appreciated and I completely agree.

Perhaps you can direct me to a resource where i can acquire the necessary knowledge to determine exactly how much voltage my minidsp is both receiving and outputting?

Best,

Just monitor the indicators in the software GUI.

Fascinating.

Where in the new interface (as per the video I previously linked to) is the voltage meter you alluded to?

I didn't watch the linked video, sorry.
He seems like just another Youtube clown promoting affiliate links for $$$.

Maybe but I don’t particularly care about that.

Forget the video (pretend it doesn’t exist), is it your understanding that a voltage meter is present in the MiniDSP GUI?

I presume you do considering your previous answer.

In your first answer you state it is my responsibility to understand the gain structure of my system and in your second answer you state I merely need to monitor the GUI.

I am fine with both of your answers with one small exception “How in the hell do I accomplish what you have recommended?”

Thanks sgain

Have you actually used the new Device Console software and/or the old 2x4HD software plugin?????

I have which is why I am asking these questions. I see various meters indicating ‘levels’ but not a direct voltage meter.

Again, my sole question is “How do I measure the voltage input/output of the MiniDSP 2X4HD during operation so as to ensure clipping is not occurring”

The signal levels are directly proportional to the voltage levels. If one clips, so does the other.

Sorry about that.  I am confused by your posts.

The bar indicators 'are' the voltmeters.  They are not labeled directly in volts, but rather as dbFS (Full Scale.)  Full Scale isn't an absolute reference normally, but in this case it is because we know the 2x4HD is specified at 2 volts RMS maximum.

So, just monitor the bar indicators (input and output) for maximum indications and that will tell you if you're voltage clipping anywhere.

I see, thank you. I didn’t understand the relationship between dbFS and voltage

Thanks again
