Hi,

I am looking for a miniDSP set up that could suit my present needs but that would also be usable for my future set-up. I have an HC & HiFi install, but will change it within a few months.

Current Set-Up:
- Yamaha RXV-663 used as a pre-amp for LCR and Sub channels,
- M-Audio DSM3 Active monitors for LCR chanels, connected to the Yamaha using RCA pre-out,
- Power amp and DIY subwoofer for LFE chanel, connected to Yamaha using RCA pre-out.

In this configuration I am thinking about using two miniDSP 2x4 for the 4 chanels (LCR + Sub). I would only use the parametric EQ (replacing the DEQ2496 that is currently in place but only for L & R):

Future Set-Up:
- Same Yamaha RXV-663,
- For LCR chanels: 2 ways DIY speakers, similar to JBL 3677 pro Cinema loudspeakers (JBL 2416-1 driver + 2373 Horn + 2035H woofer). I am willing to use miniAMP for the High Frequency drivers, and use another power amp for the low frequency drivers (I am thinking about an Emotiva power Amp).
- Power amp and DIY subwoofer for LFE chanel, connected to Yamaha using RCA pre-out.

In this configuration I would use the same 2 miniDSP 2x4 and would add two miniAmp.

The first miniDSP + miniAMP, for L & R chanels, would:
- be used as an active crossover for both channels, routing the signals to the LF and HF drivers,
- be used as an param EQ for both inputs chanels and the 4 outputs chanels,
- amplify the two HF chanels wth the miniAMP (2x20 Watts config),
- root the signal of both LF chanels to RCA exits.

The second miniDSP + miniAMP, for Center & Sub chanels, would:
- be used as an active crossover for Center channel, routing the signal to the LF and HF drivers,
- be used as an param EQ for both inputs chanels and the 3 outputs chanels,
- amplify the HF chanel wth the miniAMP (2x20 Watts config, even so only one way would be used),
- root the signal of the LF chanel and subwoofer to RCA exits.

I have a few questions:
- for the first setup: can I use a single power supply for both miniDSP ?
- same question for the second set-up: one single power supply?
- for the second setup: is it something that could be done the way I see it?
- I am thinking about upgrading the future config with more 2 ways speakers (2x surrounds and 2x back surrounds), the adding more miniDSP+miniAMP kits > can I link all of them together in order to use a single power supply?

That's all for the moment.

NB1: I am already a REW user, I'm using it for my Berhinger DEQ2496 on my L & R chanels PEQ corrections.
NB2: sorry for my English, I'm from Switzerland.

Ok, if my project can be done one more question regarding the enclosure:

- 2 miniDSP + 2 mini AMP,
- 4 RCA IN connectors,
- 8 RCA OUT connectors,
- 4 Left HP wires (Speakon connectors?),
- 4 Right HP wires (Speakon connectors?),
- 1 or 2 USB IN connectors (???)
- 1 or 2 Power supply connectors (???)

Would a classic 19'' 1U Rack enclosure be big enough for all ?

Ok, some more questions

I listed all I would need to create the full kit with 2 miniDSP and 2 miniAMP with 4 RCA inputs, 8 RCA outputs and 4 +/- wires for drivers:

. 2x (miniDSP + miniAMP) > ok, that's the easy part
. 8+4 = 12 x RCA connectors > 6 x the kit of RCA connectors you are selling for 3$ each,
. 2 x front panel USB for both kits > 2 x the USB front panel USB you are selling for 3$ each. Will I still be able to plug them in the miniDSP when miniAMP is assembled on top of it?
. 1 x 19'' rack > found a 2U // 400mm deep enclosure for 45€, should be big enough!
. 4 x speakon connectors for the HPs wires from the miniAMP > found them for 3.70€ each,
. 1 or 2 power supply or USB power supply > I've heard about regulated power supply ?

I already have a dremel for the enclosure, but could you please indicate what is the diameter of the RCA connectors you are selling, in order to find appropriate bit (not sure about the translation: to use on an electric drill ?)

What about wires:
- to link the RCA connectors to the RCA plugs from miniDSP, I sould use RCA wires with one side without the connector?
- to link the speakon connectors to the miniAMP exits, I guess standard HP wire is ok?

What else should I need?

Thanks!

(and sorry for wall my questions!)

@ Morg81,

First off all, our sincere appologies for missing your post!! Not sure how we did that but it went in between the many posts we receive... Sorry about that.

In answer to your questions above:
- Your setup as above is all fine. No problems. Note that one power supply would be 80W(2xminiAMP) + remaining so a 90W would be required..
- Both setup will work fine but remember to get the 2.1 advanced as a plug-in(easier I2S assignment). You can still use it as a stereo configuration anyway.
- Note that the USB extended won't fit very well with stacked board. You might have to solder to the underneath of the board.
- RCA combo: An 8mm hole will do and standard shielded audio cable works.
- Speaker cable: it's only 20W max power so not sure speaker is a bit too much.. :-)

Sorry again for the delay in our reply!
