Hi everyone... I'm a bit dyslexic so please excuse the typo's...

So the story begins. I've had an interest in speaker building for a while now, still not a pro and much to learn, however I've chosen skip a few steps and go for the throat when it comes to speaker building.
Not having a enthusiasm for a standard build, I've opted for a mantra that "if its got a shape edge, its not for me". This as you can imagine is a challenge. Maybe this says a lot about my personality, but I'll leave this to Sigmund Freud determination when I meet him in 50 years or so.

Starting off with the basic's my first build was a variant of an IB design, though some will say its just a sealed design, but I beg to differ! Its was a sealed logarithmic spiral. The bugger was at the time of building the cabinet I wasn't aware that this already existed - Yes I'm talking about Laurence Dickie's Nautilus.

Time passed reading and learning about the various typologies of loudspeaker design, whilst auditioning multiple self builds. I came to conclusion that playing music in a large room (15m x 5m) something was wrong. The sweet spot was fixed.

Whilst reading a paper about wave front technologies by Belerigde Audio I stumbled across MBL radialstrahler... Conclusion, "I can make that!" So I did. Initially starting off with following MBL's core principles, this provided a benchmark in understanding the effects of materials, size and process of constriction.

After Mk1, Mk2 etc, I started to augment the design to produce something more original, the introduction of a second transducer initially! Now this has fixed some issues but also presented new hurdles. This is where I am looking forward to receiving a miniDSP to test, refine and remedy the current issues at this point of the project.

I have to thank the DevTeam @miniDSP for all their support - what champs!!!

Whilst waiting to take delivery, I'm continuing to building more OD and have attached a sample of what been built... Watch this space. ;) B)

Whilst waiting for the DSP, thought I'd share another build done over the weekend. It's a more refined version of my very first one. Though I'm not convinced by having then bulb shape opened...

Very interesting :) The motor is actually driving the "petals"?

Yes, the motor is driving the petals. All I'm doing is changing the vector's of the source, allowing high frequencies to have a 360 dispersion which IMO delivers a more realistic audio playback. However it only works in large spaces... ;)

Too cool. What is the reason for it only working in large spaces? Is it because you need distance around the speaker because of the omni (horizontal) radiation? Or does the listener need to be a certain distance away from the speaker?

I'm not an expert, but I presume its to do with room reflection, small rooms = more reflections, especial positioned in the corner, though, I have toyed with the idea of converting one hand as a light chandelier... ;)

Listening positioning is interesting, even having left and right sphere sitting on top of each other sound amazing...

So... MiniDSP has arrived, though I feel a little ashamed as i'm yet to open it up. I've been a little pre-occupied with building an all singing all dancing Omni. I wanted it to have interchangeable petals, ported or sealed, and large... the core is build, but due to an awful material chosen on my part, its like an artificial lung!!!

However, the port is becoming interesting!!!

That is so awesome. That must be one of the best DIY projects I've ever seen.

haha... I'll take that as a complement... I have made some better recordings, though again still using a smartphone and not in stereo... Also starting to get to grips with using the miniDSP., though I have come to realise that theres a major flaw with my design. technically I need either a 2x8 MiniDsp, or another 2x4, as well as an amp per motor... So this becomes an expensive build!

Feedback would be good either here or on my page - www.facebook.com/SparrowLegsSpeakerDesign/

PS, I will say it again, my design wouldn't have worked without the help of the DevTeam @ MiniDSP!!!

Such a great update once again! Gotta love this setup and creativity! Thanks again for all the good updates and glad to hear that you're having fun with your 2x4HD. :-)

Send us some REW measurements if you get a chance..

I will show some measurements over the weekend, likely to be Sunday. The black Omni needs more attention and investigation as this can be wired in; Series, Parallel or Series Parallel. Then I have to do all this in phase and out of phase and then all of this again with a single channel or 2 channels.

So as you can see there are quite a few combinations with just one speaker...

I'm more than welcome for any input...
