I was excited about the Dirac boxes. They seem like a wonderful solution for nearfield listening especially, because unlike just Dirac software a separate box will allow one to use both headphones and speakers with a minimum of fuss.

But the current Dirac page says not-a-Mac only. Is that a typo? After all, Dirac Live software is available for OSX as well as other platforms.

@ DS21,

Thanks for your comments!

For the time being, it's indeed correct that the unit will only be compatible with PC for the configuration process. There is a layer of communication (USB DLL) which right now we've only compiled for Windows and tested extensively under that environment. It's however at the top of our list to work out a Mac DLL as well since it's as important to us than it is to you (we love mac.. :-)

The lack of Macintosh support at launch is very disappointing and difficult to understand, given that I have used both the Dirac measurement software and the OpenDRC tools under OS X. So there is obviously an existing codebase that enables USB communications to the hardware.

This of course makes the product significantly less attractive to Mac users, whose only option would be to also purchase VMware Fusion or Parallels Desktop along with a copy of Windows just to configure.

As you well know, many audio enthusiasts are Macintosh users, and I want to get another vote in for making cross platform support a priority.

Do you have a timeline for Mac support for this product? I would pre-order, if it is a lack of funding.

@ Roverone,

Apart from what we already said above (i.e. we like Mac and we didn't do it on purpose), there are some technical explanations behind it. An OpenDRC is not a DDRC when it comes to firmware and the way the device is being configured from Dirac Live vs our own plug-in. Complete different code base, requirements for the drivers and API. So as much as we want to make it happen, these are not as plug&play as it seems from the outset. :-)

Anyway, as already mentioned above, it's indeed on our todo list. We don't have a habit to give timeline though. It's a bit of a bad idea when it comes to complex projects such as porting a full static library to another OS. We can just say it's on the top of our todo list. :-)

Hi,

first post here on the forum.

Just to let you know that I'm another very highly interested potential user, under OsX...
I'll wait until you guys release the code for Mac OsX, and wait until bugs are cleared, and then plunge for a 22D to try that.

I want also to know how/where can I be informed of that OsX compatible release is available? Will you post here? Do you have a newsletter one can sign in? Do I have to check your website for news once in a while?

Many thanks again for this very very tempting product.

Best Regards,

Greg

@ Greg,

Thanks for your interest in the platform. We will indeed release a Mac version as talked above. It just takes more time since API are completely different.
If you want to subscribe to the newsletter, you can do so from here. www.minidsp.com/aboutus/newsletter

Hoping this info helps.

I can't vouch for every possibility but I've used it in Win7 running under VMWare Fusion on OS10.8. and didn't run into any issues. Oh, there was one, which is that I needed to have the UMIK plugged in before starting the VM, but obviously it's easy to fix.
I am not miniDSP support.

Like John, we've indeed been using the software under VM fusion without any issues. All good.

One more related question. I just noticed that the OS requirements stated in the manual are "Microsoft• ® Windows® Vista® SP1/Win7/Win8"."

I still have XP running on Parallels, so I assume I need to "upgrade" to one of MS's newer versions of Windows. I use my Parallels "cripple mode" only for audio-related stuff: running Unibox in Excel because it doesn't work right on Excel for Mac, running the Anthem ARC software for my AVR, measuring drivers and crossover parts with a Dayton DATS, and I guess for a little while calibrating a miniDSP Dirac unit and PWR-ICE filters.

Is there a preferred version of Windows to use for the temporary Dirac software until the real version comes out?

I have to say that I’m getting a little frustrated about this — it has been 3 1/2 months and it is not clear that there is any Macintosh progress; instead we have this talk of VM Ware Fusion. I’m going to reiterate that I had both the OpenDRC hardware and the Dirac software before the announcement of the implementation operating fine on my Macintosh, and so it is difficult to understand what the hold-up is. If the Dirac software can make measurements and create files and the OpenDRC software can upload data to the hardware, what is the hold-up? Is there some Mac development help that you could use? Many audiophiles use Macintoshes, and we’d like to see a cross-platform solution.
