I'm trying to figure out the best configuration before I purchase the hardware.

I currently have a preamp > miniDSP 2x4 > 2x bookshelf speakers and 2x subwoofers. I'm trying to find the best solution for adding Dirac live to this.

From what I understand, I can
A: get a stereo DDRC-22A and put it in between the preamp and the miniDSP 2x4.
Or
B: get a DDRC-88A and put it after the miniDSP 2x4. and use 4 of the 8 channels in the DDRC-88A.

- Is option B even possible and will it work with the software as expected?
- I've seen option A discussed, but wouldn't option B be superior since you are treating each speaker separately?

The cost will be about the same since I will have to also get a balanced 2x4 if I go with option A.

What are your sources?

Only one, an external DAC with balanced or unbalanced outputs

Perhaps consider DDRC-22D -> nanoDIGI -> current DAC for mains + another DAC for sub.

That would still have Dirac process the full range signal before it is split.
I guess the main thing I was asking was, Wouldn't it be better to have Dirac process the separated sub signal and if so, can I use 4 channels out of the 8 in a DDRC-88A ?

I would go for the 88A. Not only does your thought process seem best for your current setup, it also provides more versatility going forward. Your needs in 2 years might be different (e.g. you might want to move it to a home theater).

ok, so then it can operate as I've described with 4 channels? (2 highpassed and 2 lowpassed)

@ Shawndo,

The limitation here to be aware is that Dirac only applies room correction inside the DSP structure. (i..e no LPF/HPF) . So you'd still need your 2x4 if you need LPF/HPF.

You could use Dirac custom configuration on the DDRC-88A I guess (2 for your front, 2 for your subs). Note however that when you have dual Subs, it's easier to perform Dirac on the overal subs rather than split. Here is a good article. www.minidsp.com/applications/home-theate...on-with-the-ddrc-88a

Putting Dirac before the crossover (as suggested by John) is easier for that reason. But the suggestion from Jagman also has a point. The DDRC88 is more versatile in terms of channel count.

I did read that, but I'm thinking that is appropriate when there is an actual separate mono sub channel from the source material (i.e. movies)
In this case, I am just using the miniDSP to low-pass the stereo signal. so the left lows get sent to one sub, and the right gets sent to the right.

In any case, I guess I really just wanted to know if more than one input can have the subwoofer checkbox checked in the Dirac input configuration. I only need a couple of extra RCA cables to try multiple configurations out to see if I can even tell the difference.
Thanks, DDRC-88A is on the way!

Marking to follow. My exact setup though I'm still not sure yet from the responses. Will come back.

Thanks.

@ Shawndo,

In answer to your question, yes you can indeed "tick" more than one input. You can have 8 subs if you want, all configured in Dirac Live for SUB (i.e. different type of sweep). Have fun with your setup.
