Hi,
can I use the DDRC-88A as a preamp?
In case of "yes", how does the volume control work in DDRC-88A? digital or analog after D/A conversion?
Thanks.

The volume control is digital. I think it's the last processing before D/A conversion but devteam would have to confirm.

Use as preamp - depends on what you mean. You can connect the outputs directly to power amps, however there is only one set of inputs (analog) so there's no source switching or anything like that.

HTH :)

Thank you John, your anser is exactly what i want to ask for.
You're right, my question was not precise enough. I mean "can i use the ddrc-88a to control the volume of my system?“

John's answer is right on, the digital volume is indeed digital (56bit) and you can indeed use the DDRC-88A to control the volume of your overall system. Nothing preventing you from doing so! :-)

Thank you devteam,
i have two questions more to ask u.
is there anyway to upgrade an existing minidsp 10x10 hd to a dirac capable version?
can you tell me about the output impedance of analogue output channel of DDRC-88A?

Thanks again.

I have a very relative question and an idea.

I guess that in the case the DIRAC 88A is used with 2 channel sources then 4 sources can be connected at the input side, selectable through the 4 Dirac program selection. Meaning (Program 1 =sources 1- Input 1,2- Program 2-source 2- input 3,4 etc)

the question for me is what happens with the volume control when the power is cut off to DIRAC and then it is restored?, is then DIRAC88A volume control restored to its maximum level or it will retain the volume at the level that was set before the shutdown.

This is my main concern, which I am afraid to check as it will damage the speakers.

Can you please give a well though response.

@antpantaz

Indeed, the level will just get restore to the level you had before the power down. That's the case for any miniDSP unit actually. :-)
If you have multizone, check out this app note: www.minidsp.com/applications/home-theate...in-a-multizone-setup

@nhs,

The 10x10 doesn't have the DSP power required I'm afraid. As for the output impedance, it depends on the RCA or XLR:
Please check out the spec page on the product page (www.minidsp.com/products/dirac-series/ddrc-88a) It will show the various in/out impedance.

I'm looking to do something similar, Source 1 (HT 5.1 ) - inputs 1-6, source 2 (2 channel )- inputs 7,8. My question is, since I have one pair of main L/R speakers, can source 2 have the same outputs (output channel 1,2) as source 1. Is this doable? Also would I be able to get bass management for the 2 channel source?

@murtazao

Sure, that's perfectly fine but you don't even need multizone in that case. You just want to use 2 diifferent presets:
PRESET1 / HT (5.1) - > Enable 1-6 on input matrix mixer of DDRC-88BM
PRESET2/ stereo - > Enable 7-8 on input matrix mixer of DDRC_88BM

This way you'll have what you need.
