Hi All,

Currently I have a 2.2 set-up, meaning two satellite (monitor) speakers, both supported by woofers in the corners of the room (a la Lyngdorf). TThe woofers are stereo. The cross-over is set at 150hz. The cross-over, the delay on the monitors and room correction is all done with the Minidsp 4x10 HD in combination with REW. Because the room correction is still not completely up to my liking, I was wondering what the Dirac series could do for me. It looks very promising. But how would the set-up be in practice?

The Dirac will be digital in and digital out feeding the 4x10HD. The cross-over obviously has to be done with the 4x10HD. But how about the delay on the monitors? Currently I have 4 ms of delay on the monitors because of the difference in distance to the listening positions. When working with the Dirac, should all room corrections be done via the Dirac instead of the 4x10HD? The cornerwoofers are around 8db louder, so that's quite a difference.

Would love to hear your ideas, thanks in advance!

I would question your setup in general with the woofers separated from the satellites at such a high crossover point.

But apart from that, my setup is similar. I use a 4x10HD for 3-way speakers and use it only for time alignment and the high-/lowpass filters of the actual crossover. No EQ in the 4x10 at all, I leave that all to the DDRC-22D. Works well for me.

Thanks Beauvais! I have my reasons for the high cross-over;)

I was wondering, would the Dirac correct the time allignment in case it was set-up incorrectly (this I find the hardest to do).

Apparently Dirac can do some time alignment, but certainly not such massive amounts like 5ms (about 1.5m of distance). This you have to do in the 4x10 on a per driver basis.

Thanks again! I think the current delay is close to where it should be so in case the Dirac should make some corrections I expect it should not be significant. This means that the Dirac does time alignment on a frequency basis, because per channel there could very well be significant differences in time delay depending on the frequency?

I think I was unclear or not very precise. Dirac can not do any time alignment in the strict sense as it processes the entire signal. Time alignment in the strict sense has to be done in the crossover/controller on a per driver basis.

However what Dirac can do (if I'm wrong, somebody please correct me) is correct phase issues (frequency dependent time adjustment if you will) as some of its filtering is done with FIRs which allow the phase to be treated independently from the amplitude.

But either way, I would strongly suggest to do proper time alignment of all your drivers in the 4x10.

Some very good comments by Beauvais and some good questions for this thread:
1) Multiway time alignment is to be used to time align 2 drivers with each others (i.e. making sure acoustic centers of each driver is synchronized). That's something to be done at the crossover design. It's "not" something that Dirac is expected to solve.

2) Similar to this concept is time alignment for 2 enclosures (i.e. L&R) who may not be at the same distance at listening location. That's where you'd expect Dirac Live algorithm to apply to delay correction.
