I'm quite worried when you say: "two ground pins are shorted" In general there shouldn't be any short so please have a look at the External DC connectivity tech note that can be downloaded from the download section of the website. It appears that the document you have is an outdated "Word" format document where it seems like the text boxes + Pinout BOXES would have shifted up with respect to the picture. The tech note that is on the web site should be your reference. There is no need for any jumpers to make the miniDSP work. My worry is that you may have created a short and that could explain why you now have a surge on your USB port. Anyway, please review your DC connections since we've never seen this symptom before. External DC connectivity is different than that you have sent me, see post #179:
