If the taps have to be fixed per channel, and no downsampling is possible, I would prefer 1024 taps at 48khz than 512 at 96khz: that would give as 4 times the power/precision.

I totally agree with this. Maybe there can be different versions of the plugin?

Alright, let's see how we can optimize that 4way configuration since speaker filtering (e.g.linear phase) is the core application of this plug-in here. For those of you who are new to this community, please read the product concept of the miniDSP to make sure you understand the difference between a plug-in (what's being discussed here) and a processing platform (i.e. miniSHARC). Maybe in the future, other "plug-ins", will have different applications. Hoping this clarifies.

1) There are indeed IIR banks available before each FIR filters. (8biquads for Xover = 8 biquads).

2) We did realized the limitation at the low frequency while doing some simulations, and one thing we thought of was to build a configuration with more taps on some channels E.g. LF, but less for the Low frequency.

3) @96kHz, we can work with 4096taps. Making the taps freely assignable would indeed be the way to go we feel. It's a bit of a change for the firmware + software to account for a "resource" calculator but our team has some idea. Instead of hardcoding the resource (as above), it's best to let you guys decide of the number of taps else we can be sure that one of you will decide he wants a different assignment of the taps. ;-)

4) We'd prefer keeping 96kHz if possible. Maybe trying in the future other tricks.. :-)

A free assignment of taps would indeed be a nice solution!

Now I have to rethink my configuration again! I was just integrating 2x8 and openDRC into one housing (see here) but I'd prefer to get rid of the SRC between openDRC and 2x8 ;)
